Blown 3.9L V8 Rebuild Recondition or swap out?

G'day Disco 2 owners, I have a 2003 3.9L V8 auto which has recently suffered a head gasket failure and I now need to conduct a full top down rebuild of the engine. Additionally there are a few extra complications as I had some water get in which may have hydro locked the engine itself and caused more damage to the pistons and conrods that aren't currently visible. So with all that in mind I have been quoted $3600 to do the top down over haul of the engine. This doesn't include any additional work if the piston or conrods are buggered so that leaves me with the following options.
    1. Do the overhaul and hope for the best
    2. Swap the engine for a newer 3.9L V8 (budget of $3600)
    3. Swap the engine out for a P38 4.6L (budget of $3600)

So what do you all think? What is the preferred option?
Has anyone done the swap from a 3.9L to a 4.6L before? Any advice? What was the preferred donor engine? Does anyone see any other options I haven't considered? Does anyone have a donor engine for sale in Perth?

Thanks in advance for the advice and help.

    Option 2

With a limited budget I took option 2, 90K km engine $1800, took my time and fitted it myself, so far so good but only time will tell. Was also offered a reconditioned exchange motor for around your budget. I just noticed you are talking about a 2003 model which must be the 4.0L motor so my experience is less relative.

Why not just replace the head gaskets yourself for a couple of hundred? My previous motor had got hydrolocked dozens of times before I replaced the motor, no damage done. If you have water in the middle cylinders then forget head gasket, your block is probably stuffed.

    Milld,
I have only had a quick chat with the mechanic who has indicated that it is more than just a gasket swap hence the $3600 price tag, however I haven't had a chance to talk to him again as I have been interstate so if the block is still ok a head change? and gasket swap would be the easiest and cheapest option.

Was looking into my other options given the quote

    Cheers

    Oaka,
Thanks for the info, who was sourcing the reconditioned engine for you?
