Mine were cracked and taken off years ago. Despite mud, sand, dust, rocks etc etc it hasn't made any difference to the brakes. The wear rate is the same, nothing has been damaged and when I press the pedal it still stops. They're prone to cracking, don't do much and will probably just damage everything in the area if they crack off.
