    Centrifugal oil filter

After several oil changes, I have despite all the warnings, sheared the threads on one of the securing bolts.I have heard of "inserts" that can be used to continue using the bolts. Grateful for info on what they are called, where to buy and how to fit them.
    Cheers

I assume you mean a Helicoil. You can buy helicoil kits from any bearing/bolt shop. You will need access to be able to drill and tap the hole before you insert the helicoil.

I too stripped the thread with the original bolts but found that with some longer bolts there was still thread to use further down so i was able to get it nice and tight.

The other option is to drill it out, re-tap the thread and put a helicoil insert in.

Worth a try with longer bolts first though.

they are called helicoil and can be bought at most auto spares shops they normally come as a set that is drill bit, tap, insertion tool and inserts - an important point is measure the depth of hole and get the insert to suit. Very easy job if you can get good access to the hole...good luck

The ham fisted twits at the Dealer stripped mine as well. They are M6 from memory so I drilled and tapped them out to M8 and have not had an issue since. The holes are not blind so the swarf will just fall to the ground. Dont bother with the helicoil.

Whats the main cause of stripping them? Overtightening?

Yep, I was told not to use anything more than a 1/4 ratchet.

Guess that's why they list torque settings
