You could try and drop the whole assembly out of the bottom, just gotta take the front axle and gearbox crossmember out of the way, I think.

I was thinking about that option. I'll have a closer look at it today.

Anyone else tried it or know if it can be done?

    Thanks.

Looks pretty tricky to drop the engine through the chassis. The transfer case looks hard enough.

Is it possible to remove engine/transmission/TC as a single unit with the body on through the top?
Looks a bit tight & maybe a little heavy, car may need to be raised, & unit brought out at a fair angle.

transfer box and gearbox have to come out the bottom, if you wanna remove the lot as one you need to take the body off.

That's what I suspected. Thanks for confirming it.

Just another thing that Land Rover did not engineer for serviceability but engineered for assembly instead. I am slowly getting used to their way of thinking, not too sure if I like it.

If the D2a is scrap, then there is one way you can do it, and thats cut the front panel out, then you can bring the whole lot out the front.

Its not possible to "engineer" the vehicle any other way, a longditudinal mounted engine and gearbox, and then the t-box on the end of that, no way it would work, has to come out the bottom.

if you have access to an engine crane, then I remove transfer boxes using that through the doors and down through the console / tunnel plate, saves trying to "mess" with the weight of the t-box when the bolts are removed, and the crane makes it easy to lower it to the floor.

    Thanks again.

I suspect that if we could unbolt the top section of the radiator support panel & remove rad, IC, condensor, etc then then complete assembly could come out that way. Well that Is the way I have done on many jap RWD vehicles in the past.

Either way I have removed the body from the D2a now as the body needs to go to scrap. Attached are some photos of where it is at.

There is no better way to get to know your car than to do a complete strip down of a wreck

I would guess there is a couple of days work in total to strip down a wreck - so not too bad.
