    Runs hot!!!

    G'day All,
    I had a brief phone conversation with a mate this morning, he has a S2 Disco which has (to me) a weird problem. It runs hot ? near boiling, but if you open the heater tap you can drive it all day long with no ill effects, has anyone come across this problem before, or is his radiator in need of some TLC?? any help appreciatted, cheers Dennis

    Yes they run hot, around 96, due to emissions and such,,
    as to "close to boiling"
    how dose he know?
    the actual boiling point will vary due to his coolant mix,,
    if his dash gauge is over horizontal then its probably already too late,,

    Yep, they will run well over 100 degrees without boiling. The cooling system is pressurised which increases the boiling temp and so does the addition of coolant to the water. It boils somewhere around 115-120 degrees I think it is with pressurised water and another 5-10 with coolant. The system normally runs close to 100 is will typically run up to about 106 or something like that, especially if low revs are being used where the radiator isn't given full flow, or is the ambient temps are low where the engine runs warmer (by the cooling system design) to offset thermal losses. The Disco2 V8 and TD5 are supposed to run fairly hot in comparison to the older and cooler engines.

    They do run very hot to meet EU emission standards. Mine runs hot, too hot in my opinion. The electric fan is on 75-80% of the time. This is normal driving, no towing or weight carrying–I don't even have a tow bar...
    I will be carrying out the cooling system mod, from what I've read it gives a more consistent temperature during all driving conditions.

    Great info here, with recent updates.

    D2 mod

    I will be copying post no. 33, just the stat housing.
    Posts are saying they get a constant 90oC give or take a couple of deg in traffic or highway.

    Either way, the entire post is a great read with lots of info. Hope it helps.

    Funny but mine was always at 90deg on the highway pre waste gate adjustment, now with 19.5 psi boost she sits on 87-88. D2a intercooler to go in should lower the temps further.

    That thermostat mod seems like a lot of mucking around to me..

    Is there a danger that if we start running too cool we will wear out the engine more quickly, or is it "just" keeping the environment that bit cleaner if we run hotter?

    I'm liking the mod. Very interesting comments about the operation of the original thermostat being pressure operated and not temp based. Anyone else know anything relating to this?

    If you compare the existing cooling system to the mod above you will see the only real change is moving the thermostat to the top hose (which has always been where the stat was housed), and removing the hose connecting the top hose to the existing thermostat housing. All this pipe appears to do is feed warm coolant to the stat because of its low down location.

    After investigating my pipes! All I need is an inline stat housing & stat, no need for the extra BMW hose, or cutting of hoses. Just loosening to rotate as required.
    I don't have the 3 way connector at the bottom, it's all one piece.
    I will post pics when I do the mod.

    The reason I will mod is because my Disco/engine has only done 70,000 ks, regularly serviced and has always run hot. I don't want problems in the future that could arise from too much heat to other components.
