    Replacement brake discs

    Hi all,
I need to replace my front brake discs. I've looked checked various suppliers on line and there appears to be a wide variance, not only in price, but also brand of disc. I would like some advice on the pros and cons or issues relating to OEM, alternative brands, cross drilled or original design, impact on operation of ABS etc. I had heard the OEM ones were 'soft' and hence wore faster, but provided better braking; is this true?

If anyone has some knowledge or experience on this, I'd greatly appreciate their comments.

    Mundy

I changed my brakes about 3k ago. I was going to go with the oem and asked the guys at LR direct and they strongly recommended the minitex brand. Since I've had them I've had no issues and braking is good. They were considerably less than the oem too and LR direct said they also use them when they change their customers pads.

    Hi Mundy,

Put a full set of RDA Standard Rotors & RDA Extreme pads (front & back) in December and what a difference. Bit of hard yakka doing the change but all good. Getting a full brake flush in the next month to ensure the fluid is at it's best. Got them at a great price too as my daughter is a Parts Interpreter currently with a Toyota dealer here in Perth.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

P.s. The outlet hinted as have others on this forum that slotted &/or drilled don't make that much difference except for price.

I am in the same boat and need new front discs. I also have oversized tyres so wanted to get some performance discs. I have located a few different types of discs and pads

From Sydney for $170 for the discs:
    Land Rover Discovery 2 Brake Discs - SDB000380CDG - sydney4x4accessories

From Roverparts in Victoria, there are a number of alternatives:

    Land Rover Parts - BRAKES

I have been advised to go genuine in pads by a number of people including 2 landy specific mechanics as they have seen the quality of non-genuine parts vary heaps. I have also been advised by people on the forum that mintex or others might be a good brand.

But I'm a bit stumped by the choice. And not sure what to do. So I'll watch the replies with interest.

Stopping power when you need it is more of a concern, a soft pad will give better breaking. The so called performance pads are often harder, you don't want a pad that glazes a disc, as stopping is greatly reduced and heat build up causes brake fade. Been there with so call performance pads down a steep road even gearing down in a low gear, They were smoking hot.
A soft pad will leave brake dust coating your mags, but that's a trade off.
Mintex have used them a few times an no probs.
Accept that Brake pads are a consumable, and not that dear a part.
Why have something that lasts for ever but doesn't perform.

Every one has their favorites and what they chose they will say its the best.
    Bit like holden vs Ford

Re the black brake dust on the mags, have some cold tea (the drink) in a spray bottle and spray the wheels regularly and then just hose off. If left for a while you may need to also brush lightly with something like a 50mm paint brush before hosing off.

I always wondered what was in those expensive mag wheel cleaners at auto shops, now I just gotta try black tea.

Bearmach are not a part manufacturer. They buy parts from various sources and label them Bearmach. Same as Britpart they are just a distributer/ wholesaler of parts. They can supply genuine, or OEM parts as well as aftermarket parts,. Generally parts offered by Bearmach are of good quality.
eg, Britpart coil conversions in Britpart box are King springs.
