    dry bearing noise in engine

i have discovered a noise coming from the front of my engine. its a dry bearing sound, i dont know weather it the timing chain or whether its one of the pully bearings, i have checked all the belt pullies and none seem to have any movement in them except one, the tensioner pully (i think it is, its the bottom laft pully when looking from front of engine) seems to have a bit of play in it and also when the belt is running it deoesnt seem to track true and smooth it has a bit of movement in it.......has anyone else had this problem or have any ideas what it might be???? except for my 3 year old son i dont know anyone with small enough hands to get into it is there an easy way to get the belt off?

    Bearing noise

I've had problems with the belt tensioner pulley bearing - and the symptom was a squeaky bearing noise and also uneven tracking of the tensioner. It is easy to replace the whole tensioner - remove the belt, then one bolt to remove - I think its a 14 or 15 mm with a multihex pattern.

Then I had a very distinct rumbling, dry bearing sound that turned out to be the bearing for the shaft that holds the viscous fan. I determined this by progressively pulling out and greasing or replacing must other bearings (except A/C clutch bearing that was okay and i was able to repack anyway).

The fan bearing is a bit more time consuming to replace but there is a good link on this site - you can search for it or if not found I can probably locate for you as I have it bookmarked on another computer (don't ask!).

You need to remove the viscous fan so I bought the right sized open ender spanner and ground the sides down so it was narrow enough to fit. You also need a 'holder' for the flange on the fan shaft - I made one up out of two peices of flat steel and a nut and bolt. Can send a pic if desired.

Sorry a bit vague on details as its a while since I did this job.

    hope this helps

thanks mate i'll see what i can do, what exactly does the belt drive? does it drive the water pump or is it mechanically driven from inside??? also do you know when the timing belt is ment to be seen to? the car has just ticked over 200,000 but i've only owned it for 10,000km

    I'm assuming it's a TD5....

The belt drives the viscous fan, alternator, power steering pump (which in turm drives the water pump that sits behind it) and the A/C pully. With base models there is an idler pully which has a bearing that can dry out. Not sure about higher models that have additional features.

The Td5 has a timing chain - it would be unusual for that to be the source of the noise - my money would be on the viscous fan bearing. Not sure of replacement interval for the timing chain but others on this site will know.

Would expect the timing chain to last as long as other major engine components.

if it's the viscous fan shaft bearing....

have a look at this link

Fan support bearing In would think. Easy follow the link. Dont forget your can get as cheaper equally as good replacement bearing. 3206 european, 5206 japan, just has to be doublé row angular contact. Around $35 instead of $130 for the original SKF.
