    School boy error!

On Tuesday night during the heaviest of downpours (In Sydney) I went to leave work. As I reversed out of the loading dock a very kind patron stopped me and told me I had a flat. So, I drove back in, parked and got out to see. Unlike in a light Mazda 3 (The other car) the rim was on the ground and the tyre squashed out.

As it was already raining, I cracked it, left it in the dock and went back in to work for a drink. As I was leaving I thought I would have a quick check to see where the jack and tools were. After finding the tools in the panel in the back door I went searching for the jack. I couldn't seem to find it anywhere! Looked in the storage spots, under the seats, tried to lift the cargo carpet, and after cracking it once already decided the previous owner kept it!

The following day, I went to Auto one and bought myself a new bottle jack. Drove back to work and as it was raining threw it in the back of the Disco and played the waiting game til the rain stopped.

Today, the rain had stopped! I went to work and had to paint some stuff, so, after the first piece was painted and I was waiting for it to dry, I drove the Disco all the way into the dock and started to change the tyre. A workmate and I got stuck straight in, until we had to check where the jack point was. The workmate looked at me and just says. "Read the manual!"

I jump in the car, pulled out the manual and got reading. On the page of tyre changing I notice there's a guide as to where the jack is kept. So, I have a quick read of that too... Isn't my face red!!! The jack is apparently located in the engine bay! Sheepishly, I show my workmate the page, popped the bonnet and checked the compartment. There it is!!! Staring me right in the face, the little orange Land Rover jack!

Tyre was changed, the jack was re-seated and away I went.

Moral of the story. Read the manual!!! My wallet is over $100 lighter due to a 15kg paper weight.

Happily I will chalk this up to being a Discovery & 4wd newbie!

Oh, and always be able to laugh at yourself. If you take yourself too seriously you'll see an early grave.

You have to start somewhere! 3rd car. I've driven a 78 Falcon and a Mazda. Only ever changed one tyre.

Haha! Happily I was at work. If I was anywhere else it could have ended very differently.

Keep the new jack handy, or even replace the original jack with it if you can.

The genune jack is notorious for leaking at the most inopportune time.
