    2nd FPR coming up

    G'day All
Have not been on here for a while as D2a has been trouble free. Came to an end on the weekend when I saw diesel dripping down the back of the engine block. Fuel pressure regulator is leaking. This will be the 2nd one but not unusual I guess. Local stealer is quoting $450(gulp) for the kit including gasket and gauze o ring. Any one got one recently and did any better from an independent, need it fairly soon so buying O/S is probably out.
    Thanks

    Reco kit?

Why not recondition the first one and put it back on, leaving the second one ready for the same? The o ring, gasket and parts are about $40 from the UK, including the hose, which fails due to heat exposure (3 connector unit). Sorry, didn't see bit about not o/s on my initial reply; but turnaround can be in less than 10 days.

You were well and truly "serviced" on shipping.

Rimmers quote £118.00 for the FPR and £38.00 courier. Even land-rover-parts-shop.com who I consider to be a bit over the top with their shipping charges quote £60 for TNT courier to Australia.

thanks bsperka. Looks like the way to go $wise. The UK kits I can see on ebay have gasket & o rings for around $20, and claim common leaks are thru seals. no mention of hose. Can you give me any info re: source of kits including hose as I'm assuming is what I need. I don't have the old FPR so I'd recon the present leaking one.

I rebuilt mine - new gasket and seals for $15.00 (bought the kit off eBay from the UK). No leaks since. I don't understand why more people don't just rebuild them at that price.

JC told me that the hose doesn't fail that often (I have had one fail on me) - a lot of mechanics don't change the hose when changing the FPR as it's extra work of removing the inlet manifold to get to it. Sadly the only proper way to buy the hose is with the FPR. But there is a UK seller selling the hose seperately. Alternatively, you can get the hose rebuilt - I have a spare one here that I had Enzed recondition for me with new rubber flexible part.

    That sounds more reasonable.

The kits fix the leaking o-rings, but it is possible for the regulator to fail in other ways.

mturri posted this to a south african 4x4 site:

    Possible failure mechanisms:

1- Leaky outer o-ring (diesel leaks out, effect on engine running depends on extent of leak)
2- Leaky inner o-ring (diesel bypasses regulator valve, fuel rail pressure drops, engine performance suffers)
3- Leaky diaphragm (diesel leaks through the back of the regulator)
4- 'Tired' spring or washed out valve seat (pressure not maintained, injectors under fueled, engine performance suffers)

As you can see replacing the o-rings will only fix 1) and 2), the other scenarios call for replacing the complete insert or even the whole fuel pressure regulator block.

If the inner workings on the fuel pressure regulator are stuffed, the part can be replaced with a Bosch p/n 0.280.160.575 FPR (used in several Audi & VW models over the last 12 yrs).

Bottom line is replacing the o-rings is likely to solve your problems but may well not.

So it's entirely possible to fix the visible leaks but still have a faulty FPR after the "repair". Worth bearing in mind if you're still seeing fuelling issues after having done the kit.

It also goes someway to explaining why people often prefer to replace rather than repair.

    cheers

    Ebay site

Here is the ebay site I bookmarked some time ago from aulro.com

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 TD5 FUEL REGULATOR LINK PIPE | eBay

16 pounds + 6 pounds freight. As far as I recall, I did a search on ebay.co.uk (from an aulro.com post that has the site details), and found a seller that does the pipe and o seals, so that the freight cost isn't duplicated.

I have a few mates that have found that the "O" ring kit hasnt fixed thier regulator, and have had to put a new one on.
