Thread: Disco II tire suggestions

I had a Discovery fitted with the original Michelins, great around town and on the highway, but fragile in the bush; then Cooper ATs, good all round, but could not handle the Gibb River Road; then BFG ATs(in 10ply Light Truck), they are the best, I will happily fit them again, but are currently using up original equipment on a Puma 130. The BFG AT is excellent on road and seriously tough off road.

I think the new Cooper S/T Maxx would be a serious competitor for the BFG A/T with the BFG being a little better on road, while the Cooper may have an advantage in the bush. The Cooper S/T Maxx has more aggressive tread and has three ply walls in a 10 ply tyre (like the BFG).

I have a set of 265x60x16" 694 Bridgestone L/T Duelers on the D2a and they work well and can quite often be bought on sale at a reasonably low cost in comparision to many other A/T tyres.

You don't need a lift kit at this size and they seam good off road and are very stable on rough dirt roads at speed, plus at that size they do give you more ground clearance and make the D2 look much better than with standard size tyres. Mine have done about 35k now and still look like they will do another 35k at least.

They ride smoother and quieter then the BFG A/T's I have on the D1 as a comparison.

Your two hours drive from my place if you want to drive to Goulburn you can take the D2a for a drive and judge for yourself.

As i have said before,it is BFG A/T's for me.Had a few sets on D2's,had a fantastic run from them.

You can get them in either 245 or 235/70/16.Make sure you get LT's.

I didn't find them noisey at all,in fact were quieter than a worn out set of OEM Michelin XPC's.

The problem with discovery tyres is that there are virtually no Light Truck (LT) construction tyres in the standard size. The Bridgestone 694s dont make a LT in the 235 70 - Its a passenger tyre only (not as good side walls etc etc)

Also Sam mentioned the Cooper ST/Maxx.

A mate has them on his work hilux in the standard 29 inch size and they have worn out in under 40k which is terrible wear.

You will find that many people change the tyre size so that they can get LT tyres. I have gone for 235-85-16 maxxis 751's on my disco. They are the same as a defender tyre size and probably the largest you want to go before changing drive ratios etc. They are available everywhere (standard fitment on pootrols, toyototoas and deefers), LT construction, narrow so good for sand and with 32 psi in the front and 40 in the rear, handle well on the bitumen. They will fit on your vehicle without a lift with the added benifit if you have self-leveling rear suspension, they wont scrub out on the guards should the system fail and you find yourself sitting on the bumpstops.

I am surprised how far I can get with the maxxis 751's and at $220 a tyre, they fit the tight wad ticket too. Go the skinnies, you know you want to ......

I just got six Pirelli Scorpion ATRs not a week ago for $260 a pop. Replaced BF Goodies AT that did close to 100K. Was looking for Coopers but hey, stuff happens.

My thoughts are that the Pirelli ATR would be a very suitable tyre also. They are excellent on the road, efficient and very quiet for those highway km's and hook up well offroad - but they are not really designed for mud.

Personally, if you are going to offroad it, the BFG AT's don't work well on the Disco2 rims when aired down. They are one of the few tyres that break the bead by themselves when 4WDing at normal 4WDing pressures - thats hard to do on a Disco2 rim!

Personally I would also avoid Cooper like the plague. I think they are an exceptionally over rated tyre that are sold as a premium tyre.

Personally I would also avoid the Bridgestones. My experiences with these are that they are notably susceptable to punctures when offroad, even the reinforced ones. I recall one camp (my previous workplace) we ran where we had a number of punctures and every single one of them were in Bridgestone tyres which a few of the vehicles were running - none in any other brand, including P construction tyres. This was too uncanny to be a coincidence.
