SLS pump intermittent
A mate of mine has a TD5 up here and his pump is operating intermittently. Being the norm up here the LR dealer says the pump needs replacing
My understanding is the pump should not be on all the time anyway as it only should refill the bags at start up or load changes??
It sounds to me like a leak or a faulty level sensor. Is there a step by step trouble shoot checklist for the system? I'm hoping there is as have one for Pinzgauer and goes through it bit by bit, yes/no type questions
Everytime he has a problem with these things the LR dealer just starts changing bits until its fixed, the second td5 he owns had an engine rebuild, was running, got a radiator hose leak so they changed that. After that it wont start. Spray fuel in the air cleaner it will start, then stop. The diagnosis has been:
- faulty injectors
- faulty ecu
- faulty fuel injection pump
This from the official LR dealer so it dont inspire confidence to buy a electronic dealer dependent car. This disco has been abandonned now in the shed in disgust

Your right it shouldn't be running all the time. Have you checked for leaks in the bags? Most of the time this is the issue, raise the car to off road height and spray some soapy water on them and look for leaks, particularly around the base. Do you find if the car is left for a while it eventually sags? But when you start the car the compressor kicks in and raises to normal height? If that's the case I'd be putting my money on a leaky air bag. When/if you replace sk both. Do you know when/if they were changed. The oem ones generally last about 10 years or so.

Is the pump operating intermittently or all the time , I'm not sure what the concern is, can you be specific?
If the pump is operating intermittently, then its not the pump thats at fault but the airbags.

yep cheers
kinda confirmed what I expected as the 716 Pinzgauer has air assisted leveling on the back and only operates if you change the load and on and off when on rough ground as the level sensor gets confused.
Also that the mechanics up here havent got a clue as I recalled later that the guy had replaced his rear airbags last year so more and more it points to an air leak somewhere. Most likely when he replaced the airbags last year they did not 100% reseal the lines.
Off to Turkey for 2 weeks so I will have to check it when I get back
