Thread: TD5 the search begins - advice required

I have been looking for a couple of years for a similar vehicle, but I think I will stick with the one I know - TD5 Defender. There are still plenty under 125000 km, with one in QLD at the moment for $14000, appears to be reasonable value if there is nothing wrong. With a vehicle under 125000k you should get 75000 trouble free kilometres before spending money. Anything around 200000k, be prepared to spend money.

I have had a look at a couple under 100000k with the owners wanting around $25000 +. They both had coolant leaks - back of the water pump and the other around the oil cooler area. Every D2 I have looked at had transmission leaks, either auto or transfer case. I think they are a vehicle that needs to be used and not parked for extended periods of time.

If I get a D2 TD5 auto it will be 03/04 vintage and I will make sure there is plenty of room to spend $5-6000 to get it to where I want it mechanically.

I still believe they are the best value for money of any second hand 4x4 if you do your research.

Saw a D2 for sale out side the Tuggernong fire station this week. Not sure if it's a td5 . I already have one, so didnt look to closely.

Why advertise your car as being in exec lent condition if it is not. This can only lead to frustration and disappointment for both parties.

Lets just say that it's life by the sea is starting to show. The cruise control doesn't work as well as a few other bits and bobs that would be obvious to the seller. In fact if it had been listed honestly I wouldn't have bothered looking at it.

Try not to get too frustrated. I know I got fed up of paying for inspections in the end and bought a vehicle that I possibly would have passed on if I'd been a bit more patient. It checked out ok but the inspection was done by a a non-specialist that does quite a lot of work on LR's, so wasn't as through as it might have been. Still it's been a reliable car and the problems I've had have been relatively minor.

I reckon there is an element of ignorance displayed in most adverts, and often the condition describes the paint, and possibly the interior, and not the mechanicals. After all most punters wouldn't have a clue what their car was like beyond what they see from the drivers seat.

I would steer clear of the converter failed discovery. Also if your after a Center diff lock make sure its a 03/04 or if willing to hook up a cable a pre mid 2001 build. If you do a search some threads have narrowed it down to VIN numbers.

I'm a bit tempted by D2a 03/04 model as Im coping a bit of flack from family who dont appreciate my old noisy but bullet proof 110.

The D2 td5s are pretty reasonably priced.

What do I look for in a 03/04 D2 - desirable options & typical problems/faults?

What can I say, take your time and get them checked out by an Land Rover specialist if you are not able to see them yourself.
