New D2 TD5 owner looking for a mechanic!

I have just joined the club and bought my first Land Rover! It’s a 2001 Discovery II (01MY ES TD5) and I am extremely excited, even tho it has over 280000k’s on the clock!

After owning various Fords and Mercedes over the years I have learned that having a great mechanic is much more important than having a great car. A great car can be turned into a pile of junk by a bad mechanic very quickly and a bad car can be made fantastic by a good one. Also, a good mechanic on one kind of car can be terrible on another, so that leads to my first question.

I’m figuring my first trip should be to someone knowledgeable about these beasts to give it a good looking over and I have no problems driving a few hundred k's to get my car to a good mechanic. Does anyone know of a top notch mechanic within a few hundred K’s of Shepparton in Victoria that they could recommend?

If Wodonga isn't too much of a drive Ivan Clarke apparently has a very good reputation. I had a D2 inspected by him when I was buying and he was very thorough in the job he did.

    LR mechanic wanted

    cheers

If you don't know the difference between left or right handed screw driver you need a very good mechanic. However, regardless of your skill level I strongly suggest you have at hand a copy of Micorcat and Rave (workshop manual) and of course this web forum.

Microcat you can access from this site in the Computer & IT section (links to external sites) and there is also a Russian online version, also very good (Google Microcat Russian).

If you can find a dealer/mechanic which is decent they are as rare as rocking horse poo.(Romsey I believe maybe OK from other comments I have seen on this site)

There is quote on this website "Land Rover - Making mechanics out of drivers since 1948". So true.

    Regards
    Andrew
