My 300tdi has a liquid gasket (aka sikaflex), its the black stuff, i imagine a td5 would be the same, but i'd wait till somone who has done a td5 comes along to confirm that.
Hi, I have to replace the sump gasket due to leakage plus checking the dreaded pump bolt. Between the sump and the bell housing there appears to be a black rubber gasket. This is not mentioned in any of the threads or the excellent article by www.discovery2.co.uk Thoughts please, from the many who must have carried out his job.Cheers

The only thing I can think of that you could be refering too is the steel shim.
You can see it here:

Thanks Psimpson7. Yes it is metal, that is why it wasn't mentioned.
I almost replied to LRJnr's post saying I think I am the only one who can read!
Decided against it as I find your help very useful

Haha, i just read sump gasket. Whoops
Len.
I have done the job in my garage and it was tedious and fiddly. You need to jack up the vehicle quite high to get the sump out past the front diff. The rubber gasket has dowles on them and must mate to the holes in both the sump and bottom of engine. I used Loctite blue max to hold the gasket to the engine while I manouvered the sump back in to place. My reason for this job was to check my oil pump bolt. I also had much grief fitting the turbo oil return pipe specificly the two M6 bolts that hold it on to the bottom of the turbo. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!. Overall, the job prooved to be fruitful, I fixed an oil leak that was there from new. Also remember to undo the sump bolts in sequence and retorque them in sequence. All info available on the rave CD. I used a bit of butchers paper with the gasket traced on to it to get the sequence right. Some bolts are longer than others also. Hope this helps.
Regards
Robbo.
