    gearbox fault - td5 auto

    Hello
    1999 td5 , 250 klicks . Buggered tq conv .

Today speeding up onto the motorway slightly harder than I normally do and the auto ecu spat the dumby , M & S lights on and also gear selection indicator on the dash and the red one on the selector all flashing . Box stuck in 3rd at a guess by the way it was driving . Stopped when I could and shut down . On start up again it was just the same . Moving the selector through park to n is fine , as soon as I hit d the dash stayed at d and flashed no matter if 1 to d selected .
This makes me think the xyz switch is ok .
I started up and set off for home and after about 5 mins it cleared itself and has been fine since .
Any ideas why ? Neddle in a hay stack I know . I doubt it has the grunt as its only mildly modded but what happens if the auto ecu sences over torque ? How does ist sense this ?

    Thanks
    Chris

G'Day Chris, must be the weather for it!
Mine's done the same, twice in the last 2 weeks.
First was a 'Lock up clutch momentry fault, the other a CAN BUS issue, cleared on the NAno Evo and good to go.
Usually a momentary fault, you can pull up, switch off, arm the alarm then disarm and restart. Should clear the lights.
More often, get it read and see what the fault is.
    Cheers, DAve.

When you say buggered tc, how buggered? The Auto ECU will signal a fault if it detects excessive levels of TC convertor slip.

    Fault 22/P0722 Stall Speed Monitoring.
The torque converter has appeared to slip more than the specificed amount.
Will limp home mode be selected: Yes
Get the codes read and you'll know what the actual cause is.

    cheers

That sounds like a probable cause . Wonder why it just reset itself when it would not reset with the key off . Was going to call in to my friendly parts supplier and get it read but it was raining . Away for the weekend so it will have to wait until next week .

The tq conv is pretty bad , I have shoe'd it more than that and its been ok but propably getting worse . I can get 3200 on the stall test . Can't make up my mind on a rebuilt tq conv or an Ashcroft one . I am hoping it holds together until I find a new house , everything is in storage at the moment including all my tools and I have nowhere to drop the gearbox anyway .

    Cheers
    Chris
