Thread: D2 Diff carrier bearings

I just fitted a true trac to the rear my rig due to lack of spider gears
I didn't change or remove the pinion for the reasons you stated.
The carier bearings on mine were Timken LM102910 available off the shelf at the local bearing supplier.
I checked the backlash before pulling it apart and reset it to the same.
It came up fine when bearing blued.

Not that I need to yet but I'll work on the assumption that the front is the same.

Just be careful as the inners and outers/housings are mix and match and have different numbers.
AFAIR from a few months ago LM 102910 is the inner number which defines the ID and OD, but may fit to a variety of outers , which are defined by their ID ( must be the same as OD of inner) and OD which can vary. or vice versa.
You need to know both numbers , or you can buy from a LR specialist who will sell you LR size bearings.
Also just be careful as aftermarket diffs MAY not have the same OD as the stock crown wheel assembly.

So the LM102910 is the cup, I still need the cone or alternately the assy (cup/cone) number.

This is a shortcut to my post about this. I think the metric numbers I quote should be correct for you , but I am not sure.
RRC diff bearings-servicable???

It will be a metric version so should be good. Whats amazing is the lack of number in any genuine parts reference.


Actually being incredibly stupid now, I have the centre, I have a reference for the correct cup. Take to bearing shop and match.

This quoted number is from the outer bearing shell of the origional rear carier.
All I did was unbolt the crown wheel and bolt it to the new centre once the new bearings had been pressed on.
I havn't removed the bearings from the old carrier so can't help ree any number on the inner shell.
I'm fairly sure I just sent the wife down with the outer shell to my bearing man and he only needed the above number.

Yes, as I said thats the cup side that fits into the housing side. The cone (or bearing) that's pressed onto the carrier/centre is the missing bit.

Can't find it on the ashcroft site but the early diffs (series/RRC) are imperial while later stuff is metric. By memory to fit the Ashcroft stuff you need the imperial cup and the metric cone, both have the same taper for the needle interface.

Now I know the cone, I have the centre so I just need to take to bearing shop to get a matching bearing that suits the stub that the bearing presses onto. All good.
