    Discovery 2 ECU

    Hi There

I have been reading a few things about the Discovery 2's and ECU's and I am a little bit confused.

    Reading this page
    http://www.triumphroverspares.com.au/page.asp?parentid=3&productid=1

there seems to be an early (1999 - 2002) ecu and a more easily programmable later 2002 - 2004 model

However, when I read things like this,
    Land Rover Discovery II 2 ECU ECM Engine Computer Module 99 00 01 02 03 04 | eBay

It seems to suggest that you can use the same ECU for all years?

Is there an early series ECU and a late series ecu and if so, is the ECU from a 2004 Disco 2 pin compatible with a 2000 ECU (mine is a 2000 model)?

Can I just buy an ECU from a wrecked 2004 discovery 2 and program it up to be a better choice for my car.

    Best regards,
    Shannon Smith

    Ok, where to start!?!

There are 4 basic variants of the D2
    Td5 manual
    Td5 auto
    V8 manual
    V8 auto

Each of these requires a different ECU.

To complicate matters the early Td5 ECUs were not reprogrammable, and require physical removal of the memory chip, reprogramming on an external programmer, then reinstallation of the chip.

With the introduction of the EU3 spec Td5 motor the ECU was changed to a reprogrammable type.

The td5 reprogrammable version can be used on the early motors providing a suitable map is uploaded.

There are a number of versions to the reprogrammable ECU to suit either manual or auto.

The ECU link on US eBay is a V8 ECU.

    Cheers
    Paul

I'm thinking that the Ebay ECU is a V8 one. The NAS market didn't get the TD5 as far as I'm aware. The TRS page refers to the TD5 ECU which did change from a chipped version to a programable version.

As I understand it, the later TD5 ECU can be used in place of an earlier one, but it needs to have a different program put on to it to make it work properly.

I think there are other differences also between Defender, Disco2 manual and Disco2 auto ECU's and I'm not sure that they are all interchangable - others will know.

I am in the same boat. I have a 99 Disco Td5 auto with the ECU that cannot easily be remapped.

I want to swop the ECU for the later, post 2002 ecu so that I can remap with a Nanocom.
    1. Am I correct in saying, for the newer ecu to work on my vehicle I need the injector codes?
    2. Do I have to remove the rocker cover to get the injector codes or can the Nanocom give me the injector codes from my existing ecu?
    3. Do all Td5 auto's have the same standard map, the only difference being the individual injector codes?

    Thanks
    Ryan

    1. Am I correct in saying, for the newer ecu to work on my vehicle I need the injector codes? YES to work properly

    2. Do I have to remove the rocker cover to get the injector codes or can the Nanocom give me the injector codes from my existing ecu? NO Read (and save) the injector codes and throttle type (2 or 3 track) from your old ECU

    3. Do all Td5 auto's have the same standard map, the only difference being the individual injector codes? I believe that the EU3 engine map is different to the Pre-EU3 engine map. There is detail covering the various ECUs and maps on this forum. Thanks
    Ryan
You will also need the new ECU to learn the vehicle's security code from the BCU (Nanocon is your friend) it won't start if you don't do this.

    A Td5 Auto needs a NNN000130 or NNN500030 ECU.
    A Td5 Manual needs a NNN000120 or NNN500020 ECU.

There are a specific factory maps which are required for the EU2 and EU3 engines.

Td5 auto EU2 ROW requires fuel map SUTZP004-SUHDR009 for the NNN000130 ECU and SUTZP005-SUHDR009 for the NNN500030. The fuel map is the same but there are differences to accommodate the two ECU models.

These are the base factory maps for the ECU's, and give correct functionality. If you purchase remap, the remapping changes are made to the factory map which you supply to the tuning firm.

Just checking on the ebay ECU, the part no is NNN100460, the 2 numbers I have in the book/microcat are NNN100470 which is UK, Europe, Aust & Japan, NNN1000480 which is Gulf States/ROW. Now The books only list the D2 every haviing a 4.0l V8, So I can assume that these ECU's suit the 4.0 and also I wasnt aware that the V8 ECU was programmable in any way, early or late. Only the Diesel.

Now the US D2 had a 4.6, so can we say that the one on ebay, coming as it does from there suits a 4.6 and would make me happy since I have a 4.6 fitted? Having a nanocom changing ECU's shouldn't be a headache now should it? Even for $60- it's a cheap spare if nothing else.

This is just off a flat text database file so interpretation is up to you:
NNN100460 ECU's: V8 Petrol EFI, L40, High Comp, Auto Trans, Four Sensors, Air Con, Not MY02 (this seems to indicate pre-MY02).

L40 seems to suggest 4.0L. The NNN100640 has a L46 designator in this position.

The V8 ECU's are programmable, and testbook will download different tunes for different markets. The problem is that unlike the Td5 there doesn't seem to be other the tools or the map files available to non-Testbook users.

So I am able to modify/reprogram my ecu for the "other" engine? There has been mention in other placezs that the ECU contains both size maps and you just switch between them.

There do seem to be quite a few 4.6 Disco2's getting around these days that are still running the 4.0 computer as far as I'm aware.
