    Battery Issues... ?

    Hi hi!

So, the last few weeks I've had a few issues on startup. Basically, first time it happened I went to start her up and got a click then everything just died. Lost 100% power. I let it sit for about 5 mins and then it all fired back up.

Second time, not so lucky. It did the same thing but wouldn't start up after time... I ended up leaving it at work, the next day it seemed to fire.

I did a little bit of research and every time it's happened since I've popped the bonnet, moved the connections a little and it seems to gain power straight away.

So, question is, does this sound like it's a connection issue, or does it sound like the battery itself?

I'm not the mechanical type, so any help would be appreciated.

The D2 is known for giving warnings about imminent battery failure.

There are also a couple of earth straps worth checking,,
The RAVE CD will show where they are

I might go get it looked at then. The battery seems to be about half the size of the tray, so I'm also guessing the previous owner cheaped out on a battery. It seems to be about the size of my Mazda 3's factory battery.

    What's the RAVE CD?

    Battery and connectors?

If you can move the connector around, then this is not good. A LOT of current is used when starting an engine; more for a diesel. A loose connection on the right size and good condition battery can cause starting problems; if the battery is too small a capacity, then it will definitely cause problems.

The battery needs to be at least 850CCA (Cold Cranking Amps), which is the size provided as OE. You will see the CCA value is somewhere on the battery. If it is half the tray size then it will be about 400 CCA, which is way too small. A lot of people get batteries from Catepillar (CAT), as they are a good piece of kit, and provide 900 to 1000 CCA, depending on the battery and whether you believe the data sheet or what is on the battery itself. (A story for another time).

Cheers, just checked it and the CCA is 520. Looks like a new battery is in order.

My original battery literally failed overnight, it had a good strong crank one day and wouldn't start the next, it was only 8 years old.
After some thought and reading lots of comments I've replaced it with a Cat 115-2422 which is physically exactly the same dimensions as the original, but has the terminals offset to one side. This wasn't really a problem. It's 1000 CCA and cost $240.35 which is full RRP in Tasi.
