Fuel pressure reg leaking and now a mis fire??
Been a while since Ive had to post about any issues with the tug, but since I have started to use it again it has developed a leak in the fuel pressure regulator body. It is on the cards to be fixed but the car has now developed a second issue and Im not sure if they are related.
When I fire it up in the mornings it will give a chug for about 3-4 seconds and then start to idle normal again accompanied by a smallish cloud of smoke (dark but not black). I may have imagined also a splattering of dampness on the ground just below the exhaust pipe. I will need to confirm this as it may have already been there on the grubby concrete.
The car has just had a full service but this has happened since.
Its an 01 D2 auto TD5 with 216000 on the clock.
Any thoughts on if these are related or not would be handy and if it is something I will need to act on sooner than I thought. Good timing as Im am off to the Grampians for a week tomorrow and was hoping to take the Landy for a good drive.

hmmm that ugly thought hadnt crossed my mind but sounds feasable. Its had no engine temp issues.
I will put a clean surface below the exhaust in the morning and see what shows up. During the day if Im stopping for a while and going again it is fine. Its almost as if it needs to sit overnite to allow what is happening to happen if that makes sense.

Water, even a drop, in a Diesel cylinder = locked engine, at best.
There's a brilliant article for fuel pressure regulator replacement in www.discovery2.co.uk You will need patience, it's very fiddly. An alternative would be to take the engine out, remove the inlet manifold and all the other bits of stuff in the way, then the job would be a easy as the Rave manual would have you believe

Hello,
With your FPR leaking you are not getting the proper pressure (could be wrong)I had mine miss firing with mine leaking leaking. If you are not in a rush to fix it I found the pressure bit on ebay for $30
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d had to wait two weeks but better than the $430 I was quoted here in perth. The other thing which might make it cough a little, are the o rings and seals on the injectors.
I brought 2 of these no problems so far. It took me 1 hour to remove and replace it, fit two cut off bolts in the top on refit, the bottom bolt you can get to through the the front wheel once removed. Only do it when the engine is cold .

I'd be doing the fuel reg and see what happens.
It could be letting a small it of air into the fuel system when all the components are cold.
Once it's been started it may take up.
As said doing the regulator is a fiddily job, eisier with the inlet manifold off.
The small amount of water at the exhaust may just be condensation, normal at this time of year IMO.

Also, the TD5 only has 4 glow plugs (not 5) so a bit of a stutter on these cold mornings isn't unexpected...
