    D2 V8 overheating - HELP ??

    Hi guys,
I have done a search but cannot really find the answer...
I have bought a D2 from an auction, took the risk, had to replace a front hub, but that is all good.
It always ran cold, pulled the thermostat housing.... empty. Rang some alarm bells.... Bought a new one, put it in, perfect, nice warm air coming from the heater, let it sit in the drive for about 10 mins, all good.
Took it for a drive, great... after about 10 mins all was still fine, guage was about half way, I was doing some slow driving, traffic lights ect.... looked down and guage was showing 3/4's... and I could physically see the guage climbing up, in about 15 seconds it was in the red, light come on and I shut it down. Let it cool, lucky I was only about 500m from home, limped it home letting it cool down a couple more times. I noticed it was blowing out cold air in the heater though, got it home and could hear the water boiling up near the throttle body, plenty of water still in the header tank.
No mis fire at all, no signs of any water in the oil when I bought it, still none now so doesn't look to be a head.
Is there usually a circulation problem with these, as the heater core is obviously not getting any water, hoses all felt hot under the bonnet, as did the radiator.
The outside of the rad core looks fine, no blocks, thermo is coming on when it gets to temp also.

    Your thoughts ???

    Help and advice greatly appreciated

    Cheers.

A blocked or partly blocked radiator, a non working viscous fan hub - all common issues and all will cause over heating issues which in turn affects the head gaskets and warps the heads. These engines do not tolerate any overheating at all. The other issue may be a slipped cylinder liner. Sorry to say it but the the prognosis may not be that good.

Until you own a V8 D2 you dont know what underbonnet temps are!
such a fine line between normal and disaster.
    No circulation problem,,
but a need to ENSURE no air pockets in the cooling system.

Check the heater hoses, I too had this happen, turned out the hoses had been blocked with some broom handle. As it was summer never noticed until it got cooler. Then no heater, so felt for blockages, couldn't feel anything as ther were hard againste the pipes at the end. Turned out the heater leaked, the last owner plugged it and was never picked up. Drove back from Tamworth to Sydney with BHG and fillit constantly. Repowered with 4.6.

    Thanks mate,
What is the best way to bleed the system?
I had the little black plastic screw on the top hose at that T peice undone when it was all warming up in the driveway, water was circulating through that, so done it back up.

Cant comment for disco but last time I had this in my old toyota crown the heater core had rusted out and I had to drive the 45km each way trip to work through winter with the windows down so I could keep the windscreen clear enough to see out lol

Whoa! Is this a diesel or V8 unit?
If its a V8 there is NO stat on the manifold outlet, its a remote plastic self contained unit located in the top pipe down on the side of the radiator . Installing a regular style stat will cause over heating with this D2V8 application.

Thanks guys, I found the issue yesterday....
The tardo who took the thermostat out of the housing previously also must have put a welsh plug in top radiator hose which I didnt see when I put the new stat in. They had drilled a 1/8 hole through it to probably stop the flow of the water.....they obvisouly didnt realise it wouldn't slow the flow down as the radiator still had full flow.
Removed that, and what do you know...... a temp guage that doesn't go above half way....
I did notice when I was lookng through the Rave manual, the way the picture of the stat housing is in there has the two top hoses around the wrong way, I only picked it up as the housing actually has 'pump' written in the outlet for the pump.

    Happy now !!!

    Cheers,
    Shayne
