When refilling radiator, "a" trick is to use your EAS bypass system as follows: pump front susp to max height, set rears at "access".
( This ensures all air is expelled to "highest point" and reduces airpockets deep in engine)

Make sure cap is removed from expansion tank.
Remove top hose from radiator then decant () the proper red stuff (coolant, that is!) into the hose until you see the level begin to rise in the expansion tank.
Refit top hose to radiator outlet and start the engine, letting it warm up at a fast idle.
Watch for the bypass hose from top of radiator to expansion tank begin to dribble freely into exp. tank.
Wait for bubbling to subside.
Top up expansion tank only to COLD level, replace cap and switch off engine.
Let engine cool...it will then draw required amount of coolant into system from exp. tank. Level drops.
Deflate front susp to "access" so that RR is level.
Check coolant level in exp tank, top up to COLD ...DON'T overfill.

The next time the engine reaches operating temp, any excess air will be expelled through overflow with minimal loss (hopefully) of coolant. check when cool again and top us if necessary. Job done.

With the Defender, the bottle is way higher than the top rad hose bleeder, so just fill the bottle until the coolant comes out the top rad hose bleeder. Engine OFF. When filled, start engine and ensure you have a stream of water cycling back into the bottle, and test drive until heater is getting warm. Recheck level and again when cooled.

1 ... Get the nose of the car up on ramps
2 ... Cabin heater to HOT
3 ... Take the radiator fill bung off (this is to let the air bleed out only)
4 ... Take expansion tank cap off
5 ... Located on top of the drivers side rocker cover is a pair of metal coolant tubes heading off to the cabin heater ... It has a bung ... This is where you fill with coolant ... Take the bung off and fill it up

Don't fill up any where else (expansion tank or radiator) ...
If you do, then you will suffer air locks and blowbacks all the time ... Just as you are currently experiencing


So .... do the following method ...
Fill the car with coolant ... Put the top bung back in when full .. Start car and warm it up ... Watch level through radiator bung // Stop car to do a major fill through the top bung only // Start car and continue warming ...

Keep doing this till the level of coolant is stable, just needs a little topping up .. which you can do through the radiator bung or the expansion tank

Keep filling & checking,all the time, till the car is fully warmed ... Drive it around the block .. Put it back on the ramps // cool it down, and check the level again

Drain the system at the lowest possible point, to get as much coolant out as possible. then re connect system. in a clean bucket have on hand the ready mixed up coolant and make sure its a liter more than you require. connect an air line to the filler, the filler is then pushed into the expansion tank opening and a button on the filler is pressed allowing the compressed air to create a venturi in the filler that vac's out the system, it will flatten your radiator hoses if you have got it right. also on the filler there is a vac gauge, when the system is completely sucked it will show on the gauge, at this stage you stop pressing the air supply button and watch the vac gauge, if it starts creaping back or it wont get to the green zone then you have a leak...somewhere....
once all the leaks are sealed and the vacuuming is complete put the hose on the filler into your coolant and turn the tap in the unit. in about 20 sec your system will be filled to perfection...



its a bit to explain but after the first couppla tries you will wonder why you ever did it any other way.
