Are you happy you upgraded from a D1?

    Hi All,

As the heading states, everyone driving a D2 that's come from owning a D1; are you happy you bought a newer model and what do you find are the main benefits or downfalls from 'upgrading'?

The reason I ask is that I currently have both a V8 and 300tdi D1 and am considering selling both for a 03/04 D2 TD5.

I need something that can tow well, which my V8 already does but love the economy of the 300tdi. I'm thinking I can have the best of both worlds with a TD5 but am worried about going from simple motors to something that if it breaks down out bush, then the electrics may have me stumped.

I welcome all thoughts on the matter.

    Cheers,
    Rez

Theres no real comparison between a D1 and a D2.
The D1 is founded on the RR from the 80's.
The D2 was a totally new car,, its wider, longer, higher and weighs correspondingly more. it has electronics to ensure it is safe and exhausts much cleaner air.
The TD5 is robust and can produce enormous torque but requires regular maintenance.

How much weight are you towing?
    A D2 is 30 years of progress more reliable than a D1.

I did this, go from a 300 TDi to a D2a TD5. Best thing I ever did, forget the worry about electrics and breaking down. Mine has done 308,000kms and has been perfect.
A Nanocom is agood investment with the TD5 as it gives you a heads up on whats happening. eg the temperature of the motor is not accurately reflected in the temp gauge. The Nanocom gives you the actual reading.

Thanks for the replies, I'd be looking to tow 1.8-2t a couple of times a year.
Would love a D2a but price wise I'd be starting fresh as far as only really want to spend $13k ish so by the looks of it will get me a city version that I will have to spend alot on to set up for touring, or I could go earlier D2 with bullbar, cargo barrier and little basics already fitted.

Looking at other threads if I stick with earlier D2 I could swap out my TruTracs from D1 to D2 and also roof rack which is a good start.

Look for a good D2 V8 with a manual - heaps of acceleration and better economy than you would think (and better than an auto) in manual guise. Mine tows by 2 tonn Seafarer Vagabond now problems at all.

I love my 95 D1 but the D2 with its RR front end just feels so much nicer to drive.

But on the other hand the LR CEO claimed at the launch of the D2 that the Td5 Auto best reflected the character LR was trying to achieve with the Discovery 2.
