Alternator slip rings need replacing - worth doing?

I looked at my failed TD5 alternator on Thursday. Both slip rings are worn through, for about 180 degrees of rotation. Is it worth getting new ones put on, from an economic point of view. What damage may have been done. I don't have a lathe, so an auto electrician would need to do it, as well as supplying the rings.

I would also replace the regulator and brushes, so this is about another $70 to $90 landed in Australia.

I don't think slip rings are available but if you do find some can you please post up where you got them from. I went through this a while back and everything was available bar the slip rings.

    Cheers,
    Anthony.

I've chased a couple of places as well, it appears that they are not available , so the alternator is for parts only (diodes, vacuum pump etc).

    Rebuild Kits

I know this is an old post - but: I have just received rebuild kit that included everything Rectifier, Regulator, Slip Rings Bearings and Brushes for a Magneti Marelli 63321358 Alternator. Shipped from Birmingham UK to NZ - all up 73 pounds and arrived in mail within the week. If you are going to do this rebuild you will need a HEAVY weight soldering iron. Usual home electronic irons will only cause you heart aches. Some of the YouTube videos with guys using large hammers to disassemble alternators just frighten me. Use the right tools (press and pullers) for the job and you shouldn't come unstuck. Hope this helps.

Good update. Can you provide an update on the kit and how it all goes.
