    Coolant drain plug collar leaking

I have a 2000 TD5 and a couple of days ago I noticed a few drops of coolant leaking from the radiator drain plug.

On closer inspection I discovered that it is not actually the plug that is leaking, it is the collar just above where the plug goes.

I think that some solder would fix the issue as it is a metal pipe, but can't get the thing out without some severe acts of brutality.

Should I take it to a radiator expert and get them to fix it, or take it to my trusted land rover mechanic and get the whole pipe replaced?
I am going to be doing a 1,000 km's next week on isolated roads by myself so I am happy to pay for peace of mind.

    Advice or experience greatfully received.

If you do solder it yourself you might be able to see what is behind the problem and you may then be in a better place to decide if it needs replacement. I would be concerned that there is a crack that may propagate on your trip and may need frequent re-soldering so would take the gear (and water). It could go either way, cheap longterm fix or it may just do it all again next week, there would be a lot of vibration in that pipe work.

In the end I used some "one metal" (like knead it for metal) and surrounded the collar. Still let out a small drip when cold, but once the car heats up the drip stops.

The guy across the road (owns a radiator shop) came and had a look and will pull off the pipe and braze it for me on Tuesday. Said that the one metal solution is fine as a temporary solution, but should not be considered fixed.

Figured the labour component is going to be the same, but I won't have to purchase another expensive Land Rover part.

How long have you been in Alstonville John? I spent the first 21 years growing up in Alstonville, but have been gone for about 14 years.

8th year now, previous 10 in rural Vic. I had wanted to move to FNQ too but Alstonville was the compromise.

We ended up in Yungaburra on the tablelands.

We liken it to Alstonville 20 years ago, the one I grew up in.

We looked at moving back down to Ballina area (Still have some family down there) but the wages weren't as good and the property was far more expensive.

I would apologize for hijacking the thread, but it's mine

I had exactly the same issue on mine. I did manage to solder effectively after a few attempts with the pipe left in place. It failed again after I needed to drain the system so it's not robust enough to be used as intended after soldering - I'd drain by removing a hose clip if you need to drain it. Ultimately I managed to source a good second hand coolant rail and swap it.

You have just got to like the climate up there in the Tablelands, I sort of compare it to the PNG highlands only a bit hotter but eternal spring.

Down here it is getting busier by the day, I like the way Alstonville is just that little bit away from the tourists but close enough to join them when you want to eat out at Byron or catch a wave. Sorry to say but the whole country was better 20 years ago, I don't like a lot of what is called progress, I was just as happy driving on old twisty highways than the freeways but I do go on.
