The whining noise in mine is usually from the passenger seat area...
...and funnily enough in exactly the same circumstances![]()
hey guys recently i have noticed that my d2 is starting to make a whining noise that has increasingly gotten louder over the last few months. Originally i thought that it may have been the transfer case so i serviced that and was still there. Was going to continue to service both the diffs and gearbox until i noticed that the noise is there in neutral, and the noise seems to follow the revs of the engine (eg. increase revs and the nose increases.) the only thing that i can think of would possibly be the release bearing? any other thoughts on what this might be?
Thanks
Discobaz

I just replaced my A/c clutch pulley after this whine sound came. At first I thought it was the transmission packing it in. I did it with engine revs, and would die down when backing off. In Neutral also, not heard at idle only when driving. I swore it was from the auto, but disappeared after a $30 bearing replacement
thanks for that so if i take the belt off and give that pulley a spin i should get an idea of whether or not that pulley is up to scratch? also if it was the release bearing would the noise change with the clutch being in or out?
All check the Serpentine Belt alignment. Even one groove out on one pulley such as the alternator it will start whining over time.
Answer yes, the noise would definately change from the throwout bearing. noise would increase as bearing loaded, ie clutch pedal pushed in.
And yes I would remove the drive belt and have a feel of all of the pullies. Another way is to use a piece of rod or garden hose like a stethescope, on or in front of pulley bolts or components with engine running. Just don't let anything get caught in the belt or its all bad.
ok so ive run the engine and felt and listened to the pulleys with the garden hose which worked a treat, and im pretty sure its coming from the a/c compressor pulley. I know "its not worth complaining" replaced his pulley bearing, do i need any special tools to remove this from the compressor or is it pretty much a straightforward exercise?
I actually think it is the bearings in the two idler pulleys. When you take the belt of and you spin the two pulleys and they feel rough that's your whining noise. We had the same problem in our Disco, give it a look and it might be your noise.
Its not the electric fan motor for the climate control internal temp sensor is it?
