Bit of a hit & MISS..
Gibb River Road, heading west from Imintji after getting 38l of dieso for $80, and heading out into the rough stuff again, we must have hit something unusual (not seen) and followed a DANG! Up the escarpment we went (on the bitumen), crested it, then nothing - no engine.
So, get out with the reflecto triangles, make the thing safe and have a look.
Backing plate missing off the RHR brake assy, and the fuel filter chopped in half - top to bottom and the water sensor missing! No wonder it won't go. So, on with the spare filter, 3/8 whitworth bolt to block the drain/sensor vent, then 10 mins to bleed the whole system.
Away we go again, eventually, after 25 mins crawling about under the thing, but the engine now has a bit of an "outage" every now and then -just stops - tacho to zero - like an electrical seizure, but it doesn't happen when on cruise control.
It doesn't stop and need restarting, but hesitates. Seems a bit down on power.
We drove then, from Fitzroy Crossing via Buntine and Buchanan Hwy to Dunmarra, then through NT and Western Qld down to Cabarita Beach in northern NSW. Still an erratic miss, and still down on power a bit, but giving about 11.5l/100km towing offroad camper at 95 kph.
So, the question is...
"Where to start to look for the miss, without getting dirty''.
I'll interrogate the ecu with Nanocom tomorrow, but some further clues may help the run home to Melbourne at the end of the week.

We're the wires to the water sensor damaged? Could be a short in there causing something...

I had a similar issue with a surge, not after any rear explosions or anything!
Similar in that it didn't happen with cruise control, so that makes it seem like an issue with the throttle response switch.
When it has the outages, are all the leccy bits still on, like aircon, any lights, cd player etc?
Or is it a complete outage?
But yeah, the not having an issue with CC on suggests (to me anyway) an issue with the TRS.
Hope this helps.

Sorry about the delay - on hols, you know...
The problem existed in the fuel system. When the backing plate from the rhr brake assy struck the fuel filter, the engine slurped up bits of crushed fuel filter, and this has got jammed in the gauze screen in the fuel pressure regulator.
No damage occurred - just down on power and intermittent "miss" - but a right royal PITA to do in the scrub.
All back together now, except for all the other busted bits.
We'll get that polished off over the next couple of weeks... if the weather in Melb improves to an acceptable level.
Cheers and thanks for the input.
