this will happen when the engine is detected as overly hot. check everything to do with the cooling system.

i believe that if the temp is over 105c when you turn the car off the fan keeps going

Thanks guys, I'll look into it as this was happening on 14-16 degree days driving around Adelaide, it shouldn't be getting hot so it seems it needs some attention.

Maybe a dodgy sensor?

My TD5 was doing this constantly.
It was sugested on here to check the ECU setings.
Turned out to be a wrong setting of the motor in the ECU.
Used a nanocom to change it from petrol to diesel and no problems since.

Had the same thing happening to mine and led to a series of over heating issues, and am now about $3500 in the hole for a new head and rebuild.
CHECK EVERYTHING IN YOUR COOLING SYSTEM!!

Thermostat installed wrongly, or thermostat jammed shut will cause this problem.

I checked the coolant level at lunchtime today and it was down a bit, took about 1L. The header tank was slightly stained and looked like it had fluid in it when it didn't. I ran the car until it was warm (on the temp gauge) and didn't see any leaks aside from a small amount of overflow from the header tank.

Is there anything in particular that commonly fails in the cooling system? The header tank has been replaced before I bought the car and I recently (3-4 months ago) had the top radiator hose fitting replaced where it bolts to the front of the block.

I guess I will look under it when I next do some highway driving and see if there are any other issues.
