    Newbie advise please

    Hi all,

    I am a total newbie to the Discovery 2 world and am looking to buy my first Disco and would really appeciate any thoughts and advise.

    We are looking at a 2001 Discover 2 V8 Auto Fully Optioned - the current owners say that have owned it for 5 years and have had it serviced by a Rover Land. During this time, they have only replaced the airconditioning and alternator. Its got 234,500km on the clock and they are looking for $7000 for it.

    The Disco will primarily be our second car - driving to and from the train station and pulling the horse float.

    I am not totally looking through rose coloured glasses- having owned a Jag previously I realise these English roses can be petrol guzzlers and money pits - but any advise on what to look for before buying and about improvements in general would really be appreciated.

    Hi Lise,

    Sounds an obvious one but really worth paying for an inspection. Local LR or 4x4 specialists will offer this. They will tell you what's wrong in anything or, walk away!..

    I paid $99 for one in Sydney last year. I could not see anything obvious with the car but the LR Tech Fault Code said that the Air Mass Meter was faulty. I thought it was a little sluggish for a V8. The seller knocked the cost off the purchase price based on the report. New Air Mass Fitted it was a different car!

    There is a pretty long list of things to check and in typical used car transaction they may come and bite you a week later! This is my advice.

    Hi when you say fully optioned, leather electric seats etc? ACE, SLS, RWC? if it has all those things then on the money
    Remember Even if serviced, you are buying an 11 year vehicle so little niggles will pop up. Dearer to run on fuel unless LPG conversion, injected being best, but $5-6K, less what the govt still gives for lpg conversions.

    Thanks for the feedback folks. Its appreciated - Definiately plan a professional assessment and yes we do plan to pop it onto gas - I have been reading up a bit about vapour systems... looks like I may need a bit more research. Thanks for the tips.

    I've stuck to Petrol. Im using 98 Ron and find I can get 550k -600 k from tank. Much better than 91 Ron or 95 Ron. The Disco is also our second car and we maybe fill it up once every 4-6 weeks on average. Yes you may save $30-$50 bucks a tank of fuel, but divide the cost of the gas conversion by the saving. It would take us a few years to just break even!.

    I made my first Land Rover purchase 3 years ago with a 2003 D2 TD5 and did it totally the wrong way. I inspected the car myself on the basis of experience rebuilding a couple of Ford and Nissan engine/gearboxes. I bought the car and sent in in for a service and got a list of problems. Exhaust manifold stud snapped, fuel pressure reg and oil in injector harness just for starters. I agree with Rob and would urge you to get an inspection. There will be something wrong with a 10 year old D2 and the money you spend will buy you not only piece of mind, but some more bargaining power to recoup the $100 you spent or more. And make sure you use a Land Rover specialist, they pick up so much more.
    Hope you find a good one. After sorting out a couple of early problems, i love my D2 TD5 and wouldn't part with it.

    I actually dont think they are gas guzzlers,,
    you put two falcon together, one on top of the other and then connect up the front wheels to drive,, and then compare them,,
