    6 speed ?

For a while now I have been wondering if it is possible , within economic reason , to swap the 5 speed for a 6. For no other reason than a wider spread of gears . Any thoughts ?

I'm pretty sure Ashcroft were doing some development work on this with the TD5 and Defender 6 speed

Just a word on ratios, the 6 speed Defender uses a 1.222:1 transfer high range, the same as a Discovery , even though it has 6 speeds. This would suggest that 1st gear ratio is nice and low, and that 6th is a reasonable overdrive.

I would perhaps ensure that you retain the Disco transfer case or even go higher (1.003:1) to aid road manners, unless you use 235/85/16 tyres like the Defender.

We talking manuals here? If it's the auto, no way. I had my 4HP next to a 6HP and NO WAY would one of those fit.

Yes a manual. Just thought while crawling in traffic a lower 1st would be nice , without using low range , then later on the highway a few less revs. Also I had seen some articles elsewhere spruiking 6 speed conversions for old "hotted " up cars. Also i have seen a few used boxes come up for sale hence the question.
