Reflections on my first TD5 oils change.

I changed my rear diff oil and it was easy as pie! If I had not run out of Penrite Transaxle 75, or there was anyone else in Shepparton that had any, I would have done the front diff and the transfer case at the same time, only catch was to use the tomb thumb pump to get the oil in and to use Locktite on the plugs when you replace them

Next I tried to dump the engine oil and replace the centrifugal and oil filter.

Dumping the engine oil was easy as! One bolt, easy to get to and obvious.

Replacing the Centrifugal filter was no big deal really - it looked harder than it actually was. The biggest problem I had was that the person that owned the truck before me seemed to have stripped one of the bolts holding the cover on. An issue but not a big one as its not leaking. I won’t worry about that yet.

Now, the oil filter. There is a special place in hell reserved for the person that designed the location of the oil filter in the TD5! 2 hours it took me to get it out and I had to purchase a different kind of oil filter remover! I think that in the end, the easiest way to get the oil filter out is
    1) swear
    2) have a beer
    3) cut fingers
    4) swear
    5) have another beer
    6) send the wife down to supercheap to buy a different filter removal tool
    7) swear
    8) have a whiskey because now the beers arnt doing enough

    9) contemplate putting a screwdriver through the filter
    10) have a whisky
    11) get lucky and finally get the filter off.
    12) Go to bed and let the whole thing drain overnight, or at least until you sober up.

So my advise is this. If you want to change the oils on your TD5, make sure you have
    1) enough Penrite HRP Diesel 5w40
    2) enough Penrite Transaxle 75
    3) a tomb Thumb pump
    4) a decent socket set
    5) A new centrifugal filter
    6) A New oil Filter
    7) a slab of beer
    8) Locktite
    8) whisky
    9) band aids.

    I'm hearing ya!

Although mine was not as bad as it could have been.
I was preparing myself to remove the turbo heatshield and my dual battery tray, but thought I would see if I could get my hand in there to the filter, and to my surprise I was able to get the filter off within 30 seconds, getting it back on was just as easy but had a bit if a fight tightening it as I could not get a great purchase on it and my hands and filter were slippery.
I ended up with cuts and bruises along my forearm and hands, (My arms and hands are not small), but overall I was happy and it took me less than 15 minutes.

Still I agree it is not in the easiest of locations.

knowledge is power when it comes to Td5 oil changes. Just buy a pair of oil filter removal pliers, red handles black jaws from super cheat. Superworx I think they are. Gets the filter off in a flash--easy as!

No matter how difficult a job first appears, there is always an easy way to achieve the end result.
Try using 'search' and see how others have overcome the difficulties.

    Td5 oil change

Got my first discovery a couple of weeks ago.
First thing I did was go buy 20 Lts of oil from the local LR non dealer operation. Cost $299.00 nearly fell over at the price till I worked it out they gave me a real good deal $14.95 liter instead of $18.00 they charge in the garage.
I decided to go bulk as the thing holds 7.5 liters and I am doing all the changes.
When I bought the car it had oil all over the filter area . No wonder, the filter was hardly contacting the face of the of the housing.
I measured the quantity of oil which drained from the motor. 5 liters! I know where the rest went, all over the block.
If you have a tight filter take off your leather belt and wrap it around the filter and just rotate it. No problems , works every time for me.
I am learning to love this overpriced bit of high tech junk, almost as much as I love my old J20 Jeep. However I know which one will last in my household over the next years.

I did my oil filter the other day in the usual way - 2lb hammer and a 12 inch screwdriver! 30 seconds it took. I just screw the new one on tight by hand and no worries!
Radiator hoses on the other hand...

You can buy an oil filter tool for genuine TD5 oil filters from the UK for $11.64. Doesn't fit aftermarket filters, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

Not quite as elegant, but I use one like this for oil and fuel filters:

I'm fairly sure I got from SupaCheep, but can't see it in their calatog, so might of been from Autobarn.

use penrite hpr5 diesel in future, about $90 for 10ltrs from supercheap, etc and less when on special.
buy your filter kits off ebay and serice costs will drop a fair bit.
