Thread: Is my rack too high?

Thanks mate, I dont mind it, it looks ok but a little high maybe. In time I might lower it a bit as I have a couple of avenues to do it and make an angled deflector at the front.
I like that its good and strong, not built weak like some of them.

There SupaRax. There all steel with Unistrut cross bars. Very heavy duty.

To lower it an inch (which it probably needs in my opinion), could you have the roof bars sit in the basket (ie - through the basket itself) and bolt the rack to the bottom of the bars using the ubolts up the other way? Does that make sense? You would then have three bars in the basket so really long stuff wont lie flat but I don't think that would be much of a problem really.

Gday mate the cross bars are too wide to fit ""in"" the basket, is that what you mean?. I have a small amount of clearance under the basket before it hits the factory rails (Wish I could remove them). Its only the middle crossbar thats over the factory rail. I can overcome that by fitting the crossbar to the next basket rail so could effectively come down quite a bit but still limited to the height of the crossbars at the moment. My welder mate is away at the moment so when he gets back I will be hounding him for ideas to lowering it and making a wind deflector on the front. I already have an idea for doing it and will keep ya posted when done.

You can remove the crossbars and fit a rubber plug in the roof but you have to remove the interior roof lining to do so, which is a total ******.

And yes I meant for the roof bars to go inside the rack. What I actually meant was grab the roof bars, take the end clamps off, feed the roof bars through each side of the rack, put the U bolts on and then put each gutter clamp back on. It would essentially lower it a bit over an inch. If the mesh on the sides is not wide enough for the bars to fit through, a couple of small cuts would see it set right .

But maybe just do what you were going to do and I'll shut up

Nah I'm always open to ideas and appreciate them. I understand now (I think) what you mean and my rack is made out of thicker than normal tube and wont fit inside the crossbars. Be good if they did but wont.
I would love to take factory bars off but yeah big job I think and worried about leaking.

Well I finally got around to modifying the rack.Its much lower now,pretty much as low as I can possibly get it without touching the roof. Has a wind deflector now too which is better. Modified the way it mounts, now using the original gutter mounts and did away with the crossbars and welded 40mm x 3mm thick tube to the sides of the basket mounts that is slotted like the crossbars I did away with so its adjustable in width. I was able to adjust it right down to nearly touching the roof rails. Very strong, I'm a big guy and I've been on top with no probs.
Much happier with it now.

Any thoughts on it Good or Bad?
