    Front drive shaft problem

    Hi all

I'm hoping to find a solution to a problem I currently have which is a clunking sound when I engage from drive into reverse and vice versa. If I put it into park first there is no clunk.

I got under to check the front drive shaft and theres a small amount of rotational movement which I guess is normal and little or no movement back and forth. I did see that one of the 2 U joints at the coupling area seems to be worn/damaged.

The clunk is not a violent one, but a clunk all the same.

So is it possible to change the front three U joints if this could be the problem and can anyone help with a guide on how to do it.

I'm travelling at the moment and I'm in Broome, I rang a mech I used back in VIC who is supposed to know all about landrovers he told me I have to replace the whole front drive shaft at about $850.00 for the part alone, and whilst this needs to be fixed, this might fix my clunking problem.

This seems crazy as I would have thought you could replace the 3 U joints, but I know some things on a disco can be complicated.

    Thanks Howy

Have a look on here for Double Cardan repair, as someone has sorted the parts etc to replace the joints. I think it can be done for about $250 Aussie!

    Hi Howy,

See here for the info you need:

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/6...an-joints.html

    You can either:

Buy a new LR shaft from Shinju motors in Broome (freight will be free as you order over the counter from them)

Buy a fully greaseable Tom Woods shaft from Jeep Konnection for $200 less than the LR one.

Get yours rebuilt somewhere - see the above links for the joint part nos.

I would not drive too far with a clunky shaft.

I'm very happy with my Tom Woods - big advantage is that it's fully greaseable including the centre bearing.

Good luck and i wish I was back in Broome!

    Cheers

    Thanks guys

Shinju motors said they could replace the U joints but they have to check it out first, I cant get in until next week wed.

Jeep Konection can send me a tom woods one for $580 plus the postage fees.

I'm on a budget, so if shinju motors at a guess will charge about $300plus to replace what I already have then I might be better off spending a bit extra on the tom woods to get a better product.

    Thanks agian
