    removal of front drive shaft

    Hi guys

I need to remove my front drive shaft as one of the U joints is stuffed, I do have some rotational movment in the shaft ie clockwise/ anti clockwise of less than a cm- is this normal? otherwise everything else seems OK and I'm thinking I'll order a tom woods one.

Not being to mech minded I went under and tried undoing the nuts, I only have metric spanners which seemed not to fit 100% good, so would all the nuts and bolts on series 2 disco's be imperial? If so I'll just go out and pick up a set.

Also is there a procedure one might take when removing the shaft?

I believe I can still drive the car with the diff locks on provided I take it easy until I get a replacement or repaired.

    Cheers

Some things are metric, some imperial. The driveshaft bolts take a 9/16 wrench or socket.

Something like this is useful for some of them:

Drive Shaft Socket Wrench Tool - Land Rover Drive Shaft Tools

I'm pretty sure that's a britpart part number.

You will find it alot easier with a socket (if you can get one on), or the tool in previous post, it is hard to get leverage with a spanner, especially if they haven't been cracked for a while.
Once off, lock the center diff and drive sensibly!

Replaced mine just recently and I'm pretty sure the bolts were metric.
I've still got the original bolts in the shed (I replaced them all while I was down there), so if I get a chance I'll pop out and check tomorrow.

prop bolts are 14mm or 9/16af Both of which will fit the other!!

If the bolts are 9/16 a 14 mm spanner will be very tight as 9/16 is almost 14.3mm.

As for driving with out the front tail shaft, if your D2 has a centre diff lock you can drive it, but remember you will be sending 100% of power through the rear instead of 50%, so do drive gently.

With the play in the shaft, a bit of play is normal, more so on a full time 4WD.

As has been said a 14mm will fit. The hardware is most certainly imperial. It's 3/8 unf x 1 1/8" for the bolt and a 3/8 unf nylock nut.

    Hi all

Just ordered a Tom woods unit today, should take about a week to ge to broome from Vic, so I have heaps of time to remove my existing drive shaft.

I could let the local mech do the job, but I think Ill take a little more care.

Thanks for all your helpful info

When I do mine I ditch the nylocker and use ordinary nuts with lock tight. This way they can be done up finger tight with fingers which makes fitting easier. I also find it easier to do the final tighten as the non nylocker nut is wider, giving much more purchase for the ring spanner.
