Good oil and scheduled changes would keep it nice like that![]()
I just removed this sucker from my new 2004 beast to do the oil pump bolt. Just wondering if any of you have an idea of what would be a normal amount of sludge build up. The shiny higher level in this photo is what the darker deeper section actually looks like, just that the oil has pooled there. Is this shiny condition normal for 230,000km or would this indicate some work done in the past?

Nothing to worry about from your pic Coops - I've done 3 Disco and 1 Defender oil pump bolts and all residual oil in the various sumps looked the same.
A little bit of 'milky-ness' from 1 Disco but it spent a life doing city commuting and never really got the oil hot enough to boil out the condensation however, the owner (A mate) took my advice and changed the oil every 10Kkms so it never got as bad as some I have seen, which have had the complete rocker cover full of sludge!!
BTW the oil pump was as tight as a young nuns nasty.
