Fuel pumpx2 issues. Electrical
* *I've an intermittent issue with the fuel pump that has been replaced. Around 5 months ago, the td5 started and drove into the street then conked out. I was able to get the car started again later that day - and the fuel pump was able to be heard whirring before the later starts but on subsequent starts it could not be heard. I replaced the fuel pump then drove it normally.
About five days later leaving work the car drove about 200 metres (I had probably not noticed the lack of fuel pump noise before start) before running rough and conking out. After much consultation with the workshop manual on the ipad, I fiddled with the R1 fuel pump relay and (co-incidentally?) after about 15 minutes turning the ignition on again heard the pump sound, purged and all was good.
Then we drove 14000 kms to the Kimberley and back and it didn't miss a beat.
Then leaving work last night at 0100 it conked out after 200 metres. Again fiddle with the relay, swapped some around, nothing. Then about 15 mins later whirring, purge and drove 35 mins home OK. Then this morning at home, not a sound from the pump, I didn't even try and hit the starter.
I don't think it's the pump itself - it's obviously intermittent with similar symptoms over two pumps and I have only once let the tank go below 1/4 on the new pump and it happened briefly with th new pump once a few days after fitting it. I'm going to pull the carpet up again and get to the power supply tonight with a multi meter, but any suggestions from the throng as to what electrical gremlins might cause this?

Could be many different things. Take it to the workshop to read the ecu or find someone with nanocom, that will save you time messing around.
If it's not fuel pump it could be injector loom, injectors, injector seals, ecu or maybe crank angle sensor.
BTW is the fuel pump genuine/oem or aftermarket?

5.9 volts to the fuel pump - the thicker B and PW wires. There is also 5.1v on the thinner wires.
The 5.9v drops out after 30 sec as per the usual fuel pump prime sequence. From memory this should be 12v?
Battery showing 13.9v on the madman and across the contacts....
I've got a nanocom that I tried and doesn't show any errors, but I'm not that au fait with its use....

You should read 12 volts across the 2 thicker wires to the pump connector (with the ignition on). If you don't then find another earth for the multimeter and measure just the positive to the pump. If you now read 12 volts you have an earth problem. (The earth wire connects to the chassis somewhere.)
If you still don't have 12 volts then it will be back in the fuse or relay that there is a problem
cheers

Dodgy earth?
Just tested again. Pink white to black wire 5.5 volts
Pink white wire to tiedown loop bolt on chassis (earth) 12.1 volts....
Looks like cleaning the earth connectors might help.

Snap! Simultaneous posting. Thanks Tim. You confirmed my suspicions. Off to unbolt and clean...
Cheaper than another new pump! And I'm glad I didn't throw the old one out. That might still work!

Keen on seeing how you went. Fingers crossed.

Fixed!
After a read thru the electrical circuits it stated that the earth went to connector c0810 but nowhere in the book could I find where that was. I traced it back to the bundle of wires that come up through the fwd rh wheel arch then there is a single balck wire that earths just behind the ECU box on the middle of three earth points.
Took it off, there was some oxidisation, got the Dremel wire brush in there on slow and brushed it up. Replaced the lead, turned the key and 12.1v at the pump connector..
test driven ok too.
I think what was happening when it was intermittent was when I was fiddling around with the relay and ECU I must have moved the wire slightly and caused a connection. Once running the rough roads kept the connection going, until stop, sometimes.
The engine seems smoother too on a short drive, maybe fuel px is up a bit?

Great news stallie, glad it's fixed and cost nothing but time.
Did you keep your old fuel pump? Might be ok to keep as a spare.
