I did luckily.

I am thinking about testing it, but not keen on wiring it up and dunking it in a bucket of diesel... and I am not keen on pulling the new one out and swapping again.

I can't think of a reason not to try it pumping water? Just hooking up a 12v wire to a spare car battery. I'd then rinse it in diesel afterwards to prevent rust.

Sounds like a plan, I wouldn't do the swap as she's now working fine.
