Coil Packs relocation
Has anybody had any success relocating the coil packs on the V8 onto the firewall or somewhere that isn't behind the upper manifold on the V8.
Looks like a matter of extending harness and running one coil pack on either side.
A failed coil pack seems like a nightmare scenario if it ever happened!!!
I have just removed both heads for water/oil leaks......another story.
So while i was assembling i thought just maybe it could be done!
What is the failure rate on these historically....experiences?
Comments welcomed..

They are a fairly common failure with age, especially with LPG fitted. There's no good reason you can't extend the wires, just do it properly, (solder, heat shrink, strain relief, flexibility etc.) and have the coils wherever you want. However the leads might not fit very well as some cross over.
As for replacement in the stock position, you can get quite quick at removing the manifold top when you've had a little practice...

Coil Pack move
I was going to cut the existing harness and fit deutz pins and plugs (OEM style).
If i put 1 coil either side the leads should reach.
I will have a play on Saturday...
I will take some photos if i go through with it!

MSD supply both male and female plugs to extend the units and also have a good selection of aftermarket coil packs.

It really doesn't take very long to pull the upper intake. Once you've done it once, you could probably do it in less than 30 minutes. The first time took me about an hour on my 1999 Discovery, because I didn't know about the ground wires connected to the back of the upper intake on the older D2. Someone recently told me a trick though, and I bolted those wires to the fuel rail instead when putting it back together.
