hum/roar noise plus new oil leak--related?

ok I'm being a bit lazy on this one because I have not had time to have a serious look myself. On startup my D2a has developed a dull roaring noise, kind of like a viscous fan on steroids but the v fan is not running. A/C not on either. Also a fairly attention getting oil leak has started from somewhere around the lower part front of the engine. Looks to be engine oil. I'm thinking somethings bearings. Could these issues be related & what would problem they point to. Of course its quite possible for a D2 to develop 2 unrelated problems at the same time.

There are a couple of tensioning pulleys on the accessory (serpentine) belt that can fail. Does it change with engine speed?

To test, you can either use a stethoscope (or a bit of vacuum hose to the ear) near the pulleys, or take off the belt and try and turn the pulleys by hand. If a bit rough or noisy, then they may be your culprit, and its worth changing them before they fail and take out random items in the engine bay.

Another item on the serpentine belt is the power steering pump, and they can leak oil - likely to be sort of reddish or dark green, and if old can look a bit like old engine oil.

Um, TD5 or V8? The above assumes you've got a TD5 like me

    Thanks Pinelli.
Am sure its not ATF. Was thinking bearings somewhere or pulleys but the engine oil leak got me curious, enough drops to form a small puddle over 24hrs or so. Can't think of a likely connection between the leak and the noise but there may be none. Will stop driving it and have a better look over the weekend

Yes, very unusual for a Landy to leak oil.
