    Transmission and Transfer Oil Changes

my 2001 D2 V8 is due a major Service Tomorrow.

Its done 84k and back at 40k the Transmission/Transfer and diff oils were changed this was in 2006.

Somebody told me just have the oils tested and topped up to save money and they should be good.

However, wouldn't it just be best after 6 years just to get them changed? Id rather had a relaible car and minimise wear than save $400!...

    Any thoughts?

If it was mine I'd definitely be changing them (in fact I wouldn't have let it go 6 years).
I do plenty of K's in my vehicles so I'm never in a low km/long calendar time situation, but AFAIK most servicings are X km's OR X months - whichever occurs first.

By the book Diff/transfer case oil is due at 160K, but I would be changing it now. I'm sure LR weren't assuming 160K would take 20 years to clock up.

Transfer case is due 24months/40K km which ever comes first, so you have already missed two scheduled changes on that, and are now due for the third change.

    cheers

I think it's wize too. I've had the car 8 months. A good service history but I can only see these oils having been done once.

Somebody told me that new transmission oil can dislodge dirt and create issues and to leave it...

Stop listening to Somebody. He is advocating you under maintain the D2.

If you have had the car for 8 months and it's only had the oils done once in 11 years I'd be making sure it has fresh fluids all round. You should be doing a coolant change at this point too.

The comment about transmission oil is referring to auto fluid on transmissions that have be left go for long intervals and have contamination build up. If you are maintaining the car by the book it should have had an auto fluid and filter change at 40,000km and a fluid change at every 24months/40,000km there after.

It will be nice to get back on Track tomorrow then! Peace of mind knowing it's all done. The Coolant has been changed 6 months ago too.

With a hex sockets and extension?

    Have a look at this:
www.discovery2.co.uk / Automatic Gearbox Oil and Filter Change

You'll need to double check but from memory the sump drain is 5mm and the filler is 8mm. The filler plug is in an awkward spot and is far easier to access using the hex socket and extension.

    cheers

I recall that landrover dont say in their schedules to actually change the filter, its the fluid only (for the auto)

Your recall is a bit dodgy. Filter change at the first 40K km service is on the schedule.
