Yes I downloaded a service schedule which states filter at 40k. I have done mine with filter again at 84k. Only 70 bucks more to clean it out well

Why on earth would anyone do an oil change without changing the filter also? Filters are a disposable item( except for some gauze or mesh strainers) designed to filter wear inducing rubbish from the oil . Not changing them just means more wear as the old is does not do its job. 1000's for a rebuild because of early wear vs <100 for a filter and oil ? No contest!

Agree. You cant cut corners with maintenance unless you have deep pockets. The question always is, not how much your saving but are you spending enough on servicing to prevent issues! Car's, Boats. Houses same principal applys!

At some stage, Land Rover, in their infinite wisdom, removed the transmission cooler on the latter year DII model years. Not sure when the cut off date was, but you should check out your vehicle to see if it has the cooler or not.

If not, then you might want to consider changing the fluid more often, especially if you tow.

sorry, all lr's have trans coolers for the auto boxes, but yes a few later d2a manuals lost their trans coolers.

    D2 trans filter porn

End of the snowboarding season here in NZ and the D2 TD5 started struggling to make the mountain carpark. Seemed low on power at first and then the auto started "slipping". Rev counter would bounce up a couple hundred RPM.

Several hundred KM's later and back home, off comes the trans sump and fluid. Had a slight burnt smell to the fluid and the level was low (estimated from the amount drained).

New filter and 5L ATF and what a difference - smooth changes, no more slip.

Out of interest, I pulled apart the old filter and was surprised how much gunk was blocking the mesh. Photo uploaded to the AULRO gallery here: http://www.aulro.com/app/showphoto.p...filter/cat/500
