Just realised that I wouldn't get a "differential action" - opposite spinning wheels, if the drive shaft is off, as a connected flange is required to hold the carrier and cause the spider gears to rotate. - oops.
could be stripped splines in the drive flange
it could also be a snapped axle.
I have seen one (not in a LR) axle that stripped the drive splines out inside the CV.

Just to let you all know, it was a broken CV.
Now the D2a has front and rear Tru Tracks and is running 235/85R16 Muddies. How's the 110 going to keep up!?
