    245 75r16's on a manual TD5 Disco

QLD transports look's like they'll allow us to catch up with the Southern States by allowing us northerns to legaly fit larger tyres up to 50mm larger in dia than standard to our 4x4's (change to occur maybe in Nov this year). Which is great as it allow's a larger range of tyres to be fitted. I have been looking at fitting an agressive A/T or a M/T tyre for some time (brand not decided yet) however am of the understanding that my TD5 manual will take a bit of a hit if I go to much larger than standard. I was hoping for some feedback from any other TD5manual owners what their thought's are about running 245 75r16's. I do a bit of towing and Highway running and already find that with current tyres fitted (245 70r16's) lacks a little at 100km's for safe overtaking.

I am also looking at fitting Ashcroft diff locks so thought maybe changing the diff ratio's (3.75:1 is what has been recommended) may address any concerns regarding the increase in tyre size. Had thought about going to 265 75's but would push the size above 50mm increase in dia (would fill the guards out nicely though).

Any thoughs and feedback would be great.

    Cheers

Where did you hear about the law change? I reckon you'd be better off getting a chip rather than doing the diff ratios for thy size tyre.

I called QLD Transport and spoke to a gent at the modifications sections asking if they accepted Certified Engineering work conducted in states outside of QLD and therefore allow me to roadworthy a modified veh in QLD. Short answer yes but only on a case by case basis providing the modifications where not to extreme. While talking the gent from the modifications section I was asked what mod's I was looking at and I was then told that new legislation would be released in Nov this year so it may pay to wait until the change if what I mainly wanted to do was fit larger tyres.

I've run 245 75r16's since new so don't really know exactly the difference but the taking off on anything other than almost flat you need to get the revs up first before you engage the clutch. If I am towing, I usually use the hand brake when stopped and, before taking off, give the accelerator a second's blip to get the turbo spooled up. With that technique I have no problems and the extra clearance is definitely worth it.

I rechipped the ECU which also made a big difference by increasing the oomph at low RPM. Main problem is that, with those larger tyres, the odometer and speedo will now under read by 5% unless you put in one of those speed adjusters (there are lots of posts on this), which means you need to be careful with speed traps etc.

If your TD5 is struggling with a measly insignificant increase as a 245/7 then you have more problems, even up to 265's you wont need a gearing change.
Only 33's and up will require that sort of upgrade, even on my tdi my 265/70's actually help with acceleration especially at 60kph and up.
