    Service Disappointment From LR Specialist???

My 6 month Service was due last month so I booked the car in on time to a local Specialist here in Sydney. Only having driven $3k in the last 6 months. (v8 motor)

I asked for the following to be done, as I know my car inside out:-
    • Diff Oils and replace plastic with Brass Filler Caps
    • Transmission Service with Filter And Transfer Case Oil
    • Engine Flush and Oil Replaced
    • Radiator Service (a bit blocked) Sub let to a radiator specialist.
    • New Thermostat and Top Hose, as they were very old and my top hose did not look great.
    • Flush and Change Coolant
I gave them that list to do, which they did fine based on their quote all up $1575!. However, they said "this did not class as a service" and wanted an extra $200 for the Service Safety check despite the car having a Pink Slip 4 months ago. They said that they carry a multipoint safety check on the car and all it's fluids when doing a Service. Based on this they refused to Stamp my Service Book,

I feel very disappointed having spent that money. At lease I have the Invoice stating all the work!

Do you think the Garage is Fair or Unfair. I have been a loyal customer for 1 and half years. Spent a fair few K there too!.

Don't know which and frankly don't want to know which one it was. However in your list you mentioned the radiator went to a radiator specialist, whom presumably rodded the core, which means that the radiator had to be removed then sent to the Rad Specialist who had to remove at least one tank to inspect and "rod" the core, then return to your LR specialist for re-fit to the car. There is a fair amount of work for all those activities and a few hundred $ to boot.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

All I know is that in this day and age of PC and everyone HAVING TO pass the buck, this may not be unreasonable.
What I think should be a given at my service centre in Sydney, is not always the case, because some dick-head has already taken them to the cleaners for it.
Call them up and have them explain the in's and out's of why they did what they did.
Of course if this happened at a dealership, well then ignore the above and call them every name under the sun, because it will be true.

Yes the Rad did go off to be rodded out and a tank removed. They did have the car 3 days, as the rad did not come back on time and yes it did take them a fair while to put it all back together with the new hoses coolant, thermostat and tested my Viscous Coupling etc. From the $1574 bill, Labour was $600. Don't get me wrong they do a great job there but I would have a thought a Service Stamp would have been appropriate given the type of work All the fluids we're service times and they know the car very well. Air filter, breaks all round, serpentine belt had all been done a few months ago. It's not like a I asked them to fix suspension etc. Not sure what to think.

Were the wheel bearings, tie rod ends, ball joints, suspension bushs and shockers checked for movement?
Was the tail shaft greased after checking for movement?
    Where all the lights checked?
Was the hand brake adjustment checked?
    Where the seatbelts looked at?
What where the tyres like and what preshure are they now at?

Unfortunatly a service is more than just changing some oils.
But $200 on top of your work given the low Kms since the pink slip seems a bit over the top to me.
After the work that was done should it should have been less than an hour to complete the service list IMO.

How is that for a fence sit
    Cheers, Kyle

    I'll go one better,

I would charge more than 6 hours to do that degree of work, (assuming $100/ an hour...) as the rad job, thermostat and all hoses replaced , flushed and road tested takes 4 to 5 in itself. I'm talking ALL hoses here, including the heater hoses.

Also, Auto trans service on a V8 including road test, at least 1 hour.

I do agree that a service stamp should've been administered as the relevant fluids etc were changed, BUT if some tasks weren't undertaken then should've been noted down in the service book.

Not sure what the extra $200 in a safety check etc entails? That is 2 hours of work....

    Hi Rob

Yes it is a serious question and sometimes a hard one to answer.

I used to think that I didn't get out of my LR specialist service centre for under a $K and frequently that's the case. In my 30 years of coil sprung Land Rover ownership, I have gone to non-specialist mechanics a couple or three times and mostly I have not been happy with the work and even had to return it to my favourate LR Specialist so now I just accept for peace of mind I need to go to the specialist.

Before closing, I must say that the last service (12,000 Kms new D4) the service only cost a couple of hundred $ at the same place, it's even covered on the lease maintenance contract so hurt even less when I handed over the card.

This is what i know they know!

suspension bushs and shockers checked for movement? They added coils in place of my air 3 months ago. All ok then,
Was the tail shaft greased after checking for movement? No
Where all the lights checked? They certainly all work and they stated that the indicators had to be removed as part of the Rad removal
Was the hand brake adjustment checked? Breaks all redone 5 months ago.
Where the seatbelts looked at? No but a 7 certainly function fine.
What where the tyres like and what preshure are they now at? I bought 2 replacement BFG's at Pink Slip. All pressure good, i keep them good at BP.

They did note that my engine mounts may need to be replaced shortly. So some checks were being done.

Agree that there are more checks as well as oils. But we both know these items are good. Yes to my point OTT for another $200 for the stamp given I spend so much money there.

I would have thought to have your book stamped you would have to have the vehicle serviced according to what the book states for that particular service, not what you told them to do.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

It's well known that parts typically either fail early in their service life or last until they wear out.

No one should ever assume that simply because a part has been fitted recently it will be "right".
