    Disco 2 - V8 or Td5

    Hi Guys,

I currently drive a 2004 Freelander but I want something a bit more powerful for work (pulling a trailer etc). I like the look of the Disco 2 especially the 2003/4 version. On looking at the cars for sale websites there is a marked difference in price between the V8 and the Td5. My Freelander is diesel and I would like to stay with that fuel. Most cars for sale under $20k are V8 or are Td5 that have done well over 200,000 klms.

Can I ask for your impressions on the difference? Is a Td5 with over 200,000klms a bad buy? I am led to believe that the Td5 engine is extremely long lived. What else may be a potential problem? Gearbox? (manual v auto?).

I am going to look at a 2003 Td5 that has done 237,00klms. What should I look out for?

I would be very grateful for any help you can give.

    Thanks,

    Ray

    First off, read this thread:

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...02-2004-a.html

It's a sticky at the top of this sub-forum for a good reason!

Once you've read through that thread and all the linked threads found within you'll be allowed to ask buying questions....

    cheers

Love my Td5 ... but I've only got 130000kms on the clock.

Have a look at this thread ... loads of info there for you.

    Two Words -

    SCHEDULED SERVICING

You may find that some servicing has been done by the owner, you would want documentation of this, and quiz the owner about repairs and maintenence carried out.

Don't be put off by the mileage, I have seen cars with 60K on them that are in a very poor state and have had minimal servicing, you can normally tell a car that has been neglected if you know what you are looking at, but dealers are good at covering things up!

A Td5 is good for at least half a million K's IF looked after, other things may wear out first.

I would drive a few to get the feel for them, and when you have found one you fall in love with, (but be prepared to be broken hearted!) get it inspected, and depending on the results use that as a bargaining chip.

Good luck with the search, there are some good ones out there, but there are a heap of money pits!

Do your research and you will be well prepared for the common faults, time to start reading I think

I'm a v8 man having 2. I have a mate who had his heart set on a td5 until he drove half a dozen of the better examples and then after test drives got back in my v8...The hunt was then on for a v8 and he stole a very nice silver d2a a couple of weeks ago for $9400 with 104'000 on the clock. He loves it.

The reason the v8's are low km and cheap is because they have a reputation for being too thirsty to drive more than once a week. .

Im a V8 man too. Love the smoothness and power of the engine.

Question is.. what your looking for?. It's is economy?. To get a low K TD5 (if you can find one) you may pay up to 5k extra for one which has the same K's as most V8's.

For example i bought a 2001 V8 last year for 14k with 78k on the clock. A 2002 TD5 i looked at with 110k on the clock was 19k. Say for example i kept the car for 3 years then I would be paying an extra 1700 bucks a year / $150 a month to save on fuel?.... Food for thought.

    Im happy in V8 Land

I got my Td5 with 212k kms on it for 12k
Been completely reliable, i've put 20k kms on it in a very short time frame, and sure it's cost a bit in services and replacing the ATF cooler but I love it
Honestly, I think it's better to spend that little bit extra on a shining example, as we all know LR parts aren't cheap

I bought my TD5 with 210k on the clock for 13500 (01 model) had a few extras on it already, bullbar, sidesteps, snorkel and IPF's. I love it but I have to say has cost me a few bucks since I've had it and this last week over 2 grand cause, blown turbo and while I was at it done the egr removal and the manifold was warped so that had to be machined and broke 3 manifold studs. Love it, but choose wisely when your purchasing cause can be an expensive mistake if you get it wrong
