    Disco 2 td5 Gearbox weirdness

    Hi Guys,
    My First post here.
Also my first Landrover purchased last weekend.
Discovery 2 td5 auto. 240,000 k's. Oxford Blue. Love it!
We were made aware of the problem it has with it's gearbox before we bought it, but the price was so good, we assumed we could fix it on the cheap.
    Only paid $7000.
Anyway, sometimes when the car is started, select reverse and push the go pedal nothing happens, same with forward gears too.
Select Neutral, engine revs, select reverse.....Nothing.
Wait a minute or two (sometimes more, sometimes less) in neutral giving some revs, try again, Bingo! all working again.
Gearbox seems to work fine aside from this, kickdown seems a little slow, but I'm un-used to this gearbox and could be normal.

The people we bought it from said they cleared some error codes (no mention of what they were) and it was fine for 6 months.

I'm planning on getting a nanocom in the near future. As I'm keen to do most stuff myself.
Until then, any ideas what it could be? Hoping it's a sensor somewhere and I can source it myself rather than pay someone heaps to do it.

    P.S. we live in Tassie.
    Cheers!

Buy a rave, check the oil level first.

if you're lucky its just low and dodgey oil holding things up.

If you're unlucky it may be the front end of the box starting to get lazy.

Go see Justin Cooper. He's the Tassie mech guru for your LR needs. Sounds like it needs at a minimum a good flush and fluid change plus a filter. Or at the extreme end a rebuild.

First thing I would be doing is changing the ATF and filter, see if that improves things

The slow pickup from cold could be a blocked filter if you are really lucky.

First thing you should get done is a flush and filter change and see if that solves your issues.

    Wow, that was fast.
    Guess my Sunday is sorted.
    Flush n filter it is.
I should have mentioned I'm in the north of the state, so the kingston Land Rover guy is a bit too far away for me.

    Cheers again.

    Hi Scott,

Be careful flushing these trans at high KM if they have had a poor service history, it could make it worse (If that is possible) and more than likely it has either a split seperator plate gasket or internal airleak from the filter Oring causing all the oil to leakdown out of the converter overnight. The second one is easy to fix with a fluid and filter change, BUT the seperator plate leak is major surgery.

Also, unfortunately most of these tranmissions at 240K are on their last legs, especially if unserviced.

You can give me a call at work on 6229 1102 if you need clarification on anything, or advice .

    Cheers Justin,
    The gearbox was basically empty.
Has a leak somewhere, kinda hoping it's the cooler line nut where it attaches to the bottom of the gearbox, which seemed a bit wet, oil was dripping from the bracket holding the two cooler lines together under the sump fill plug. Mind you it was everywhere.
I've cleaned up the gearbox, hopefully track down where it's coming from next time I climb under it.
If the separator plate is what I think it is, between torque converter and gearbox housing obviously that requires a gearbox removal eh?

We assumed there would be a big expense somewhere along the line. All the other models we were looking at were around $10,000 with similar K's so I guess we're $3000 in front, and if it takes that to fix it, at least we know what we've got.

Now it's got oil though, the gearbox actually works, and smoother too.

Welcome to AULRO and D2 ownership

Have a look at the cooler pipes towards the front end.
The swage can leak or worse lets go where the rubber joins onto the steel pipe.

Ah, that'll do it! you didn't mention a leak. Yes they can leak from the cooler line Orings/ fittings on the box, the seal between the pump housing and the main case, the trans pan gasket, the oil cooler hoses or fittings or oil cooler itself upfront, and don't forget the rear seal between the box and transfer. You will no doubt find it now it has oil in it

Unfortunately the seperator plate gasket is between the valve body halves, internally. But I think you have found the issue by the sounds of it
