    Grrr got the wallet out again "turbo"

    Well got my disco back a few days ago. Turbo decided it wanted early retirement.I had a brand new genuine garret put on it and while they were playing around they did the egr removal for me too. Turns out the manifold was warped so had to machine that and while fitting it all back together, 3 studs broke. All done and have'nt driven it much since I got it back but not sure if it has more go or not its hard to tell. It cost me just over 2g does that sound about right? not whinging allthough ouch bank account is hurting but just curious as to what it might have cost others to get similar done.

    I recently paid $1700 just for replacement stock turbo. Sounds like a good price to me!

    ... mines definitely got some more go!

    Thanks D E makes me feel a little better. I know the egr removal kit was 90 bucks just for the kit, LR kit too I think it was.

    When your turbo goes, use it as an excuse to get a VNT replacement (or bigger unit if you prefer) instead of a stock one. They're the same price, so you'd be silly not to go the better option, especially since Bell Auto Services have advised that their VNT can be fitted to a stock vehicle.

    Alternatively, the turbos can be rebuilt for much cheaper than buying new.

    And there's also plenty of second hand running units around.

    Exhaust manifold is common to warp. I hope they cut out the webs to prevent it happening again.


    To be honest, turbo and exhaust manifold removal is pretty easy for the back yard mechanic (except I think one of the oil lines on the turbo caused me some confusion), so could have been done yourself.

    It wouldn't have been a Land Rover kit. Since Land Rover made the TD5 with the EGR for emissions purposes, they don't make a kit to remove it and have the emissions back. It would be an aftermarket brand.

    Thanks mate I only thought it was LR as I thought it was in a genuine LR packageing but I suppose his supplier may do that I'm not sure.
    Unfortunately the turbo's in, so I suppose stocky will have to do. I could have sourced a second hand one but I want to keep this vehicle for a while and although much dearer I thought better to fit a newie, ""Hopefully less hassles"".
    I dont think they removed the webbing as he is very old school LR and not keen to alter anything from standard.
    I will have a go at small jobs like servicing and minor things but unfortunately I am not much of a mechanic when it comes to pulling bits off the engine etc

    It's likely to warp again and brake studs again then. The webbing is a design fault and needs to be removed for reliability.

    There is a school of thought that removing the webbing does bugger all to prevent warping. In theory once the manifold has warped the stresses have been released so if you so ply have the face skimmed flat there should minimal chance of it warping again.

    I'm about to fax off an order for a set of studs and spacers which supposedly prevent warping/snapped studs occurring by allowing a small amount of give. JustinC has mentioned this kind of stud design is well known and effective on other types of engines.

    Described near the bottom of the page. I've been quoted £37 + £7 post for the studs less gasket. The gasket will bump shipping quite a bit.
