    Strange goings on with auto

Hi all, Having some happenings with the '02 D2 TD5. Today while traveling it was as if the auto had a 'Seniors moment' and momentarily forgot it was already in 4 at 100KMh and did a drop back and then up again. Did it very quickly and almost felt like turning the key on and off quickly but am sure it is NOT the motor. I can only get it to do it at around 100 and putting some load on, as in up a hill, under 80 cannot replicate the symptoms, no matter how hard I sink the boot.
No errors in either auto or engine on the Nanacom. Was after dark when I got home so not looked yet, but any ideas welcome.

    Thanks Scott

PS Hi to the driver of the white D2 towing a van at Biggenden for giving the landrover wave Defenders do it all the time but only seen like 2 since I started driving the disco!

    Hi
Sounds exactly like a problem with my 2001 D2 TD5 some time ago.

Sometimes the car would also go into limp home mode with "M" and "S" flashing. Shutting down and restarting often cleared this.

Dealer couldn't find a problem, but after repeated complaints, said the transmission needed to be replaced. It was *just* out of warranty (and they had withdrawn the extended 6year extended warranty some time before - another story), although LRA covered 75% after dealer put my case to them.

Unfortunately the new transmission didn't fix the problem, and it reoccurred some month or so later. Again they said the transmission was faulty and had to be replaced again - this time we managed to get LRA to cover the hardware cost, but I had to pay labour cost.

Guess what? Still didnt fix it.

Some time later after many complaints and testing, they found a faulty 'Accelerator Potentiometer' and replaced that. Never had a problem since.

Might be something to have dealer check before they dig too deep.

    regards

Those were my thoughts too, along the lines of the accelerator. Not easy to test though I think. I do not think it is the auto itself as it performs faultlessly otherwise even though the car has 217Ks on it now.A software issue or it may even be a loose connector. Am going to look at it today and check those things.

I will give the Maf a look at, although after reading the cleaning results threads a bit wary of wrecking it!

    thanks Scott

Another possibility is that there are some wiring harness issues where the harness travels over the top of the transfer case upper LH corner, they rub through, the wires momentarily short to earth and cause M S lamps and gear drop outs, also the torque converter control can be erratic in this situation, droppinig in and out of lock up, this will only occur above 80km/hr.

    Boost controller is new thanks

Well got under this morning and checked some wiring and yes the harness cover is worn at that point over the 'box but appears only the outer heat shield cover wrap (See pics) but does not seem to go through.Would be a prime suspect though , Thanks Justinc
Connections seem tight and clean , So it appears more looking is in order.
oh, and the injector harness was replaced 4000 k's ago. Looking at the service records there is mention of a harness repair couple of services ago but no details and I cannot see offhand where it may have been. I may have to check it out too. Thank you for the replies

I'd be stripping out the wires to have a captain cook. Last one I saw was just like this, further investigation revealed bare wires.

also, some of the solenoid valves on the valve body have been known to cause faults, contamination is a real possibility I have fixed 1 d2 by removing and cleaning the pressure solenoid filter. A big pain buty at least it fixed the problem.

OK thanks for the heads up, will do that. Did some more looking late this arvo but not see anywhere else that looks like a prob so will strip the covering tomorrow after I finish the cattle work. The shorting theory is gaining credence as I think it did do it over some rough bitumen sections, Do not get over 80 much on the road out to home after I leave the tar!The solenoid cleaning appears fun
    Thanks

Accelerarion over rough bitumen, wasn't traction control having a bit of a heart attack was it?
