    Hi Si,

It's your Auto Transmission XYZ switch. It gets water inside the switch usually from the aircon drain and doesn't operate correctly.

Turning the car off, moving the gear selector thru the gears is a temporary fix.

See if this makes a difference. If it does then search on this site for 'XYZ' switch' for tips on prevention of the problem.

    Cheers

It MAY BE your auto select switch

The M&S lights indicate Limp Home mode for the auto.

One of the common problems that cause the lights to flash is a faulty automatic transmission select switch. However, whilst it may be the cause 80% of the time (or at least reported on this forum that much), it isn't always this switch that causes the problem.

Most people in this forum call the automatic transmission select switch the xyz switch as there is a table in the RAVE LRD manual that has w,x,y,z contact information in it. Rave manual calls it the gear position switch and talks about w,x,y,z contacts.

I have had the problem where I moved the auto from D into P whilst trying to start it, which caused the lights to come on,as this was a bad habit from other autos (Commodore ECU auto), which can tolerate some different driver behaviours. As a result of moving it whilst trying to start, the auto ECU wasn't getting values it understood so it sooked and into limp home mode. So whilst it may be the switch, it could be another issue. As per RAVE "The existence of an intermediate state causes a fault code to be detected by the BCU."

Have a look at this link for more information.

I bought a cheapish OBD reader from Jaycar (under $90) to clear the M&S fault. It can't do anything else on the D2a, I have my Nanocomm is for that, but the OBD reader does get rid of the M&S error on the BCU that I get.

Low battery voltages will also cause it, get your battery checked first before shelling out big bickies for an XYZ swutch.

Have you changed the battery yet?

If not, replace it now - with a Calcium type otherwise it will boil off.

You can pick them up at CAT (the Heavy equipment people) very well priced.

Search the forum, its been here recently with part number etc..

You could drive, but its not going to change from 2nd gear and it may very well strand you somewhere awkward....
