    TD5 vibration normal??

I recently test drove a LR D2 TD5 2003 priced at $22990 with 130K on the clock with 7 seats from a North Sydney dealership.

They were offering 5 years warranty. It was owned by one lady in North Sydney before and had regular servicing from LR.

It was a nice looking vehicle, but we were turned off because there was a lot of vibration when accelerating and thought it was no good. My girlfriend said her voice was reverberating.

Also the right rear passenger door wouldn't unlock or windows wouldn't come down.

To add the dealer had a bad attitude and was pretty unfriendly.

Later I found out 5 cylinders do vibrate a lot particularly diesel. but I'm not sure if this one was normal?

So basically I feel a bit let down by all this and it already sold ...these ones seem hard to find in sydney.

Anyones thought on the above, could it have been a good deal?

Certainly the Td5s buzz a bit, but not to the extent you were describing from my experience, and I drive mine every day
If it had an unusual vibration, had faulty lock and windows and the dealer was being a knob then it's better to walk away
Cheers, keep looking, there are great ones out there.

Most certainly agree with Disco. Mine does not "Buzz" and with the other items and the dealers "assistance" walking as fast as possible out the door is the only option!
Dont worry , Good 1's are out there discos and dealers/private sellers. Just dont grab the first 1, look, think, look again, sleep on it , etc.

I have just bought a tdi 5 from SYdney taken it to W.A it is a Diesel
I do find there is vibration when you touch the gear lever
I will take of the tailshafts and see if that is the problem thy might need grease in them but I have to fit a imobelizer first and get it regesterd here
    before I can drive it.

Thanks for the advice on the TD5! I'm sure another one like it will go on offer soon, no need to rush better to look around until i feel happy with what and who i'm giving my valuable money too.

Starbyte, sounds like the one you purchased could be the silver one I test drove at the Brookvale dealership. I just wasn't sure at the time if the vibration was normal, but I hadn't driven a 5 cylinder before.

I've looked into the reason why vibration in straight five 5 cylinder engines occurs and part of it is that there is a lot less overlap of cylinder power strokes to non overlaped power strokes. Despite the buzz they're a bit more fuel efficient than a 6 cyl vehicle of the same weight and alot more powerful than a 4 cyl.

Think you will find they come standard with an imobilizer and internal alarm.

If the car seems to viabrate to much at idle could be engine mounts, very easy to test.

the td5's vibrate, all engines do. However once its idling and warm you shouldnt notice it.

theres a short laundry list of things that as they wear make it worse and the effect generally compounds to a certain point and then it kind of levels off. With no other info I'd suggest (and Im assuming stock mapping on the ECU) that you're probably looking at new engine mounts, gearbox mounts and oil in the injector harness.

as for the immobilizer I think I remember that the defender can be fitted up with an OEM immobilizer from the disco setup but you dont get the remote unlock feature.

I've seen one install done where the immobilizer harness ended in a set of extended relays so installation was just a case of removing your old relays and then installing the new relays on the end of the harness.

Hey Ean, my engine mounts are 100% stuffed, completely collapsed and my NVH levels are fine, certainly not to the levels OP is describing.

Agree 100%, when my engine mounts were R/S the only noticable viabration was at idle, once the loud peddle was pushed it wasn't any different to normal.

With the little amount of info from the OP it could be anything from front uni's to tyre,s.

    Cheers Ean
