Wire attached to rear axle broken

I heard a bang underneath the car while driving on a corrugated road- found the wire that is attached to the rear axle has broken. Can anyone tell me what it's for ( I guess it's to limit movement of some kind, I know the axle is supposed to move laterally) and how I might fix it? Any part number??

Wire? More info needed as in electrical? Any 'wires' attached to rear axel do nothing to locate and most certianly not make a bang as they detached, unless it was a stick/rock/corolla/getz doing the banging as it/they detached said wire!

There's a harmonic damper that is bolted to the diff/axle casing. It has a length of wire to secure it if the mount breaks.
It seems like your mount has broken & the flailing damper has broken the wire.

    The damper looks like this:

It's fitted for vibration refinement purposes so chances are that you won't even notice it missing.

Yes that's definitely it... haven't noticed any difference, thanks for the info. I'll check it out more closely, if it's not too much of a big deal I'll replace the whole unit at some stage. Wasn't really a loud bang, more of a thump I guess. Anyway good to know it's not that important!
